Iraqi Shiites Are Pilgrims Once Again They came by the tens of thousands, crowding the highways on foot, walking from as far as Basra and Nasiriyah to the south and Baghdad to the north. They carried green flags, representing Islam, and black flags, a sign of mourning. Forum on Iraqi Future Met With Protests Protected by barbed wire and armed Marines, about 100 U.S.-chosen Iraqi leaders and activists gathered Tuesday to begin planning a new government, while outside, uninvited political figures denounced the gathering.
