Oscars 2011: Growing up, going to college with 'Toy Story 3'

When the first "Toy Story" movie debuted in 1995, many of today's college students were just old enough to understand movies -- but young enough to wonder if their toys also came to life after bedtime. So when Randy Newman sang "We Belong Together" from "Toy Story 3" during the Academy Awards on Sunday night -- and the film won two Oscars -- some teens and 20-somethings got a bit nostalgic.

Social media newbies: Advice from Harper College

Months ago, I got an e-mail from Erin Brooks, who is the media relations specialist at Harper College in Illinois, urging me to blog more about what colleges are doing with social media. So, I am launching a new, occasional series about the college and university employees behind Twitter handles, Facebook feeds and social media campaigns.

Stanford has the most 'klout' on Twitter

Many colleges and universities have created a Twitter feed to share campus news with students, parents, alums, faculty, sports fans, journalists and everyone else. But is it worth the time? And what's the best measure of a Twitter feed's success? Is it number of followers, number of RT's, number of clicks on bit.ly links, number of interactions or something else?

Controversial RateBU.com lets students vote on hotness of women

Students at Boston University can now log onto RateBU.com, rate their female classmates as being hot or not, and help compile a list of the top hotties on campus. As you would guess, the site has angered numerous students and prompted the student government to take action.

According to Twitter, students are stressed out

For the past few days, I have been reading hundreds and hundreds of tweets about finals and other end-of-the-semester rituals. And you will never guess what students are saying: OMG, they are stressed out!

Colleges everywhere wish you a Happy Thanksgiving!

The best part of working today (other than being around a really fun group of co-workers) is watching all of the holiday wishes float down my Twitter feed. I think this could be the most peaceful I have seen Twitter all year...

Moving (and tweeting) into college

It's dorm move-in week at many colleges across the country -- that means traffic jams, huge piles of cardboard boxes, first-weekend-back parties and, of course, tweeted thoughts. Here are a few that caught my eye this week ... (Oh, and...

Wired studying isn't always the best strategy

College students used to show up to class with just a notebook and a pen or pencil, maybe a highlighter and sticky notes. Today, more and more students are taking notes on a laptop, downloading class documents from the web,...

Hipsters rapping: Always funny?

I could totally see this gum-advertisement-disguised-as-a-viral-video actually going viral. There's just something about white dudes rapping about who is more green, who has the better job (door-to-door knife and insurance salesman vs. computer programmer), who does more public service, who...

Cisco intern raps his way to viral glory

Greg Justice, a social-media intern at Cisco Systems in Silicon Valley, raps about the awesomeness of being an intern: like having a retractable badge and using acronyms like "CDO, EBC, GBO, and CBT, VPN, CEO, I'm soundin' like C-3PO."
