Former Harvard waitlister sings new tune about Tufts

This spring, a student waitlisted at Harvard recorded a YouTube video to win over the hearts of officials. It didn’t work. So, she recorded a second video dedicated to Tufts University.

7 sorority sisters charged with hazing

Prince George's County police have charged seven University of Maryland, College Park, sorority sisters with assaulting and hazing a pledge during initiation in October. The student told police that she was assaulted by current or former members of Zeta Phi Beta sorority on at least three occasions, according to charging documents.

U-Md. hopes to beat Duke -- and then celebrate peacefully

Last year some University of Maryland basketball fans celebrated a win over Duke by clashing with police officers wearing riot gear, setting fires and destroying property.This year university officials hope students will channel their energy and excitement into more positive actions, like a poster competition, pep rally and post-game bonfire organized by student government leaders.

Few American college students left in Egypt; Georgetown students share their experiences

Since Monday, hundreds of American college students have fled Egypt, many on flights chartered by the U.S. State Department that dropped them off in Turkey, Greece or Cyprus. From there, students were on their own to find a way home to the states or to another study abroad program. Some of those students are waiting to see if they can go back to Egypt.

Obama supports higher education, innovative research in State of the Union

U. of Colorado student Nic Ramos pays tuition with duffel bag of cash

Last week University of Colorado sophomore Nic Ramos walked into the bursar's office in Boulder to pay his out-of-state tuition bill for the spring semester. Instead of a checkbook or credit card, he carried a duffel bag -- filled with $14,309.51 in dollar bills, a 50-cent piece and a penny.

University of Arizona student Daniel Hernandez Jr. was manning a sign-in table at Rep. Gabrielle Giffords' "Congress on Your Corner" event Saturday morning when he heard the sound of gunfire. Some people dropped to the ground or fled. Hernandez ran toward the sound.

JHU Study: Alcohol commercials reach growing number of youth

Alcohol companies have vowed to reduce the number of youth who see their commercials by voluntarily strengthening their own rules for when and where to place ads. But in 2009, the average youth watched one alcohol-promoting commercial on TV each day, an increase of about 71 percent from 2001.

Another Ivy drug bust: Cornell student faces heroin charges

On Sunday morning Ithaca police arrested a 26-year-old woman, who is listed as being a Cornell University student, and charged her with possessing nearly six ounces of heroin that is worth more than $150,000. It was one of the largest seizures in the police department's history, according to The Ithaca Journal.

GWU will soon offer gender neutral housing

Starting next fall, George Washington University in the District will allow male and female students to live in the same room or suite in nearly all of its residence halls. Dozens of colleges across the country have begun to offer gender-neutral housing, as it is called, but usually the option is only available to upperclassmen or those living in apartment-style halls.

Number of college students from China booms

Last school year, the number of Chinese students enrolled at U.S. colleges increased 30 percent -- making China the No. 1 place of origin for foreign college students, according to a new report released today. For years, India held that title.

'Keep Me Maryland' emergency fundraising continues

For the next month, Maryland students can donate extra dining credits to the "Keep Me Maryland!" fund, which helps students having trouble staying in school because of financial problems. When students tried a similar fundraiser in March and raised more than $22,000.

VT students 'pay it forward' to stop bullying

This morning 500 students in an introductory to psychology class at Virginia Tech will receive Pay Day candy bars in wrappers that read, "Pay It Forward." And instead of the expected routine lecture of the day, Professor E. Scott Geller will urge the students to perform "intentional acts of kindness" -- and hand over their candy bar to a stranger, who will hopefully do the same.

Across generations, what are dating dealbreakers?

Hey, college dropouts, stop costing taxpayers millions!

The American Institutes for Research announced Monday that students who drop out of college before their sophomore year cost taxpayers millions. Between 2003 and 2008, the grand national tallies reached $6.2 billion in state appropriations and $2.9 billion in grants. The state average was about $120.5 million.

Seminarians battle for the Vianney Cup in soccer

This weekend local seminarians converged on soccer fields in Emmitsburg, Md., for the first-ever Vianney Cup Soccer Tournament. Sure, the tournament is named for St. John Vianney, the patron saint of parish priests. And sure, the Saturday matches kicked off with mass. But this was serious.

Want to stay slim? Get a chubby roommate

Researchers from the University of Michigan and Marquette University decided to study the dreaded "Freshman 15" by looking at the effect of random roommate assignments. They found that women who lived with a heavier-than-average roommate gained only half a pound of weight -- instead of the average 2.5 pounds gained by women with chubby roommates.
