The tropical Atlantic got its 7th named storm of the 2012 season this morning. Gordon developed over the open Atlantic and has intensified into a 50 mph tropical storm. As of 11 a.m. it was 640 miles east of Bermuda, heading northeast at 16 mph.

We received 677 submissions for predicting the 2011-2012 snowfall total at Reagan National Airport from readers. The average forecast was for 22” with a median forecast of 19.7”. The highest snowfall prediction was for an epic 91.4” of snow with the lowest a paltry 2.1”. Interestingly, not a single reader predicted we’ll be shutout this winter with no more snow.

For snow lovers hoping for a repeat of the epic 2009-10 winter, you will probably be disappointed. This winter is much more likely to be similar to last winter, when 10.1” fell, than the record-setting 56.1” of 2009-10. But we don’t imagine this winter will be a dud either. It’s unlikely to be as cold as last winter, but we are not favoring a warm winter either. Furthermore, we have a good chance of matching or exceeding the snow totals of last winter at all three airports.

Braving a difficult Tuesday evening commute, over 200 weather enthusiasts from across the D.C. metro region packed the Washington Post auditorium for the first ever Capital Weather Watchers training. Convened by the Capital Weather Gang (CWG), attendees took the National Weather Service Basics I Skywarn class gaining official weather spotter credentials. This group is now certified to report significant weather conditions such as damaging winds, hail and snowfall totals to NWS. And by attending the training, these spotters also formed the foundation of Capital Weather Watchers network to enrich CWG’s reporting of weather information around the region.

The torrential rains that flooded many parts of the D.C. area last week are a good reminder that our daily weather can range anywhere from pleasant to uncomfortable, calm to disruptive, and benevolent to life-threatening. Moreover, weather evokes different responses from different people: some like the heat; others prefer it cold (or somewhere in between). And in the precipitation department, rain and snow both have their enthusiasts and detractors. In my last post I analyzed the history of CWG’s daily digit: the subjective rating of Washington’s day-to-day weather on a 0-10 scale. Today we’ll take a look at forecaster averages, our awarding of ‘Nice Day’ badges, and our forecasters’ most memorable daily digit comments.

If you’re an avid reader of Capital Weather Gang’s morning forecasts, you have no doubt noticed that little box with the green number and a snippet of commentary, better known as the “Daily Digit.” We announce it on Facebook and Twitter the night beforehand. And depending on what kind of weather is your cup of tea on any given day, you may find our assigned digit to be too generous, too harsh, or sometimes just right. What is the daily digit, and how did it come about? For lack of a better definition, we define the digit as a somewhat subjective rating of the day’s weather, on a scale of 0 to 10. It debuted on December 16, 2009, just three days before D.C.’s biggest December snowfall on record. Since then it has become an integral part of our morning forecasts – so much so that many of you have asked questions about the history of this arbitrary number. Today we’ll look at some overall trends and other interesting trivia in the daily digit’s now 20-month history.

As with all of the other tornado outbreaks during this epic season, I was glued to my Twitter stream last Wednesday watching severe thunderstorms developing from western Massachusetts to northern Maine. The tweets from the weather sources I follow – TV meteorologists, online weather outlets, and news organizations – rapidly grew more urgent after about 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As during the previous outbreaks, it was through Twitter that I found out every tornado warning from almost the moment it was issued, not a television station, radio network, NOAA Weather Radio, or any other news source. I was able to follow the storms’ path through bite-sized morsels of information streamed out in 140 characters or fewer, as three tornadoes touched down in Massachusetts, including one EF3 twister that tracked for nearly 40 miles across the state. For me, the Springfield tornado erased any lingering doubts that Twitter is a top tier source for breaking weather information – and that it is profoundly changing the role of the television weathercaster.

Loyal reader Walter-in-Falls-Chuch is well-known for the larger-than-life snow sculptures he has crafted over the years. In mocking tribute to the 0.2” of snow that fell Sunday morning, Walter produced the “sculpture” above. To me, the sculpture is a good metaphor for how this season’s snowfall stacked up to last season’s (2009-10).

Capital Weather Gang introduced the Snow Potential Index (SPI) prior to winter 2010-11 starting, and it ran up until mid-March. A look back reveals that the SPI was largely successful during the winter, but there was at least a little controversy as well.

Considerable clouds and a gusty breeze from the northwest have made for a chilly early March-like day. Highs have fallen short of 50 for the most part. After a chilly a Friday night, a somewhat milder regime settles in for Saturday pushing temperatures about 5-10 degrees above today’s levels.

For most of the region, the rains have held off today. Nonetheless, it’s been gray and dreary, with highs mainly in the mid-to-upper 40s. Rain increases in areal coverage during the evening hours and sticks around through a good part of Thursday night. A flood watch remains in effect until then for up to 3” or so of rain.

This is the third part of my review of winter, covering February. On the heels of our Commutageddon forecasting triumph came the Midwest blizzard that crippled Chicago. That storm did not have much of an impact on our area. We next started looking at a storm that would ultimately give the area a dusting to an inch in a few of the southern suburbs on February 6.

In all of meteorological winter - spanning Nomageddon, Commutageddon, and other threats - the most schizophrenic reaction to a blog about snow came in response to a commentary I posted Friday, Jan. 7 about a potential for snowstorm the following Tuesday (Jan.11).

Andy Revkin of the New York Times posted a fascinating story on his Dot Earth blog yesterday summarizing new research linking fall snow cover in Siberia to winter weather patterns and temperatures over North America and Europe. The research indicates colder than average conditions in the eastern United States January and February.

We're not going to get into the habit of naming every storm and non-storm. Naming will customarily be reserved for the big ones that don't come along very often. That we didn't solicit names prior to Sunday's storm should have served as a sign that we didn't think it was going to be anything special.
Nonetheless, because quite a few readers volunteered names for Sunday's no-show storm, we thought we'd put some of them up for a vote.

Today I hosted the first edition of the new live chat video program "Weather Gang Lab." Weather Gang Lab provides an in-depth look at the big weather story of the week with original analysis. It will tend to focus on D.C. area weather stories but may sometimes address weather making news elsewhere. The final segment of the program will address user questions. The program will run each week, probably on Thursday afternoon.
