East Coast ice box: coldest weather in years freezes big cities

Along the I-95 corridor from Washington, D.C. to New York City, the mercury plunged into the single digits and teens Wednesday morning - the coldest readings witnessed in years.

Charting 36 wind-chilled hours

The cold is here and it means business. For the next 36 hours, the wind chill index is unlikely to surpass 15 degrees. Early Tuesday and Wednesday mornings the index tanks into the single digits -- to as low as 5 degrees.

Freeze watch for entire metro region tonight

Temperatures inside the beltway and east toward the Bay will flirt with freezing tonight, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a freeze watch for these areas.
