After suffocating humidity yesterday, a cold front kicked the offensive air mass out of town. Now we have delightful, fall-like dry air overhead - one of the more comfortable days in weeks. The heat advisory for the Washington D.C. and Baltimore regions has been extended to cover the overnight hours tonight and Thursday through 10 p.m. On Thursday, another scorcher is expected, with afternoon temperatures in the upper 90s to near 100 and heat indicates around 105. Hot day time temperatures represent a particular hazard for outdoor workers. In response, the Department of Labor has launched a campaign to confront the risks posed by extreme heat.

The current spell of warm weather in the Upper Midwest is not just breaking but obliterating records which have stood for more than a century. The warmth is so intense in some areas, high temperatures have reached mid-summer levels while it’s still winter. A remarkable 593 record highs were tied or broken from the East Coast to the Upper Midwest Thursday (compared to just 2 record lows) and record warmth is possible again in some of these same areas again today. Record-setting heat has been the “hot” topic of conversation across much of the country this summer. Nearly 9000 heat records were set in July, and parts of the south central U.S. (including the state of Oklahoma) and mid-Atlantic (including Washington, D.C.) had their hottest months on record. For the mid-Atlantic, relief has arrived - at least for the short term. After a record hot July, should Washingtonians be dreading what’s to come in August? The good news is that August is usually cooler than July. The average temperature in July is 79.8 compared to 78.1 in August. But it can still be scorching. Take, for example, August 1980 which set monthly records for both average temperature (82.8 degrees) and the number of 90+ degree days (22). That made August of 80 only slightly less sweltering than July 2011, with an average temp of 84.5 and 25 90+ days

Congratulations D.C.-area readers. You have just experienced -- or tolerated, survived, and suffered -- the hottest month in recorded history. We did it last July too, but this time we soared just over another degree on average to achieve an incredibly toasty 84.5F at Washington Reagan National Airport. That’s 4.7 degrees hotter than the new 1981-2010 normal or 5.3 degrees hotter than the old 1971-2000 climatological baseline. Also, it is slightly hotter than a normal July for Houston, TX and slightly cooler than a normal July for Dallas, TX. It’s like we were living in a whole different part of the country.

No surprise, here, but the National Weather Service has made it official: A heat advisory is in effect for Friday, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., for the entire metro region. High temperatures from the upper 90s to low 100s will produce heat index values of 105 to 109. A heat advisory is not as extreme as an excessive heat warning, which was in effect last Friday, when heat indices exceeded 110. But tomorrow’s combination of heat and humidity could still produce heat-related illnesses or worse, so take it easy, drink plenty of fluids, and cool off in air-conditioned environments.

The core of the heat wave that has broiled much of the eastern two thirds of nation this week concentrates on the East Coast today, with the most extreme levels focused on the mid-Atlantic. The combination of near-record heat and oppressive humidity will produce heat index values of 115-120 from Richmond to Philadelphia. NOAA reports 132 million people in 29 states and Washington, D.C. are under heat advisories or excessive heat warning today.

Reagan National Airport dropped to a mere 83 degrees this morning, which - barring a cooling thunderstorm this evening - will set a new record high minimum temperature for the date. Even more impressive, that steamy 83-degree low (assuming it stands) would tie for the second warmest low all-time in Washington, D.C. (since records began in the late 1800s).

Today alone, 141 million Americans are under heat advisories or heat warnings from the Midwest to the Ohio Valley. That’s after 78 million were afflicted by extreme heat Tuesday over an area the size of Mexico. By far, the most impressive heat and humidity records yesterday fell in Minnesota, where Minneapolis had its most humid day on record.

NOAA has upped its peak heat index prediction for D.C. Friday to a stunning, sweltering 116 degrees. Remarkably, it predicts there is a 90 percent chance it will reach at least 110 and a 100 percent chance of at least 105.

While setting hundreds of new heat records, the most notable aspect of the current heat wave gripping the central U.S. and spreading east is the associated humidity. In the upper Midwest Monday, the combination of heat and humidity brought widespread heat index values of 110+, with numerous 120 degree readings. The peak heat index occurred in Knoxville, Iowa, which reached a suffocating 131 degrees.

This morning, I forecast: “Thursday through Saturday are most likely excessively hot and humid with highs Thursday 98-102, Friday 99-104, and Saturday 99-103.” I noted the record highs for those three days are are 104, 103, 101. This morning’s Global Forecast System model projects highs of 100 Thursday, 103 Friday, and 96 Saturday. The all-time record hottest temperature in D.C. is 106. In this post, readers can fill out a poll to fill out their pick for the hottest temperature and heat index this week.

A life-threatening heat wave is scorching a vast stretch of the country, from Texas to North Dakota, with temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit and heat indices soaring as high as 126 F. The heat event will last all week, with the hottest weather slowly moving eastward into the mid-Atlantic by Wednesday, and sticking around into the weekend.

This weekend, a huge dome of heat will envelop the central part of the country, stretching from the Gulf Coast to the Canadian border. And by early next week, the heat will spread towards the East Coast. Computer model forecasts indicate this is likely to be a long-lived, dangerous mid-summer heat wave.

A heat advisory has been issued for the metro region from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday. High temperatures are likely to reach the upper 90s to around 100. Since June began, no doubt the 1400-plus new heat records set across the U.S. have impressed. But consider the following: between midnight and 1 a.m. Thursday morning, the temperature in Wichita, Kansas spiked from 81 and 101 degrees. Yes- the temperature ROSE 20 degrees in one hour in the middle of the night, passing the century mark. To the north, across the Great Lakes and Upper Midwest, there were some remarkable - though not nearly as dramatic - temperature declines.

Hot on the heels of Wednesday’s 99-degree record high at Reagan National Airport, Washington’s official observation station, the mercury spiked to 102 degrees Thursday, equaling the record for the date set in 1874. The 102-degree reading also matched the warmest temperature reached in the month of June since records started being kept in 1871.

On Tuesday, more than 200 high temperature records (and about 100 record high minimum temperatures) were set mainly in the Midwest. Minneapolis surged to 103, its hottest day since July 31, 1988 and the second hottest June temperature on record. Today, the dome of hot air shifts East, with record heat a possibility from the Ohio Valley into the mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Philadelphia and New York City may threaten existing records of 95 degrees. And Washington, D.C. and Baltimore may also approach record highs of 98 and 97 (from 1999).

Afternoon highs in the 70s - though mild - have been nothing out of the ordinary; record highs are in the 80s. But the tropical flow ahead of the giant Midwest storm has flexed its muscles after dark holding nocturnal temperatures at historically warm levels.
The low Tuesday morning at Reagan National was only 63 degrees, tying the record high minimum from 1971. On Wednesday (yesterday), the low was a balmy 68 besting the record high low of 66 in both 1920 and 1977.

D.C.'s official weather station -- Reagan National Airport -- is still three 90-degree days away from breaking the 90+ record of 67 set in 1980. But the deed is done out at Dulles Airport. Thursday's high of 93 at Dulles not only tied the record high for the day, but put Dulles over the top for most 90+ days in a year.
