Confessions of a winter weather expert

I’m a weather weenie. A weather weenie is someone who obsesses about some aspect of weather and, at times, that obsession rules their life. My friend, Bob Hill, describes it as a disease.

An ode to Snowquester

Twas the night before Snowquester and all through the land,
the snow lovers were giddy and rubbing their hands.
Snowblowers and shovels were nestled in the garage,
snow was finally coming, this was not a mirage.

Snowquester: March 6 Washington D.C. winter storm name

Usually we ask readers to propose and vote on names for significant winter storms. But this time we’ve already received such a perfect suggestion that we’ve decided to go ahead and adopt it: Snowquester.

The sculptor and the magic snow machine

Last Thursday, while most of the Washington, D.C. area awoke to a miserly half inch of snow, I awoke to find 24 inches in my front yard.

The Washington D.C. snow hole: version 3.0

It struck in the winter of 2010-2011, last winter was like one big giant snow hole, and, it’s back, back again. Here’s 2012-2013’s version of the Washington, D.C. snow hole.

Watch: Chinese broadcaster covers typhoon Haikui tied to rope

Covering a landfalling hurricane or typhoon can be hazardous. One Chinese TV station decided it wasn’t going to take any chances. Lest its reporter be swept away, it secured her to a rope as she covered the landfall of typhoon Haikui live in Ningbo.

Spring snow in the forecast late in the week (April Fool’s!)

Just when you thought the “winter-that-wasn’t” was long behind us, one weather model is forecasting a major snowstorm later this week. With unseasonably cold high pressure forecast to move into eastern Canada, the stage may be set for a rare spring blizzard. An April Fool’s post.

Weatherman dream: My first stab at weather education

I actually first dabbled with weather education as an upstart ivy-league collegiate trying to fulfill my Columbia College core curriculum science requirement. I had the bright idea to take a weather class to re-start my journey to fulfill the science requirement. I loved the weather, was passionate about the weather – of course I’d rock this class. Would be one science class down, two to go. No problem. Big problem.

Weatherman Nick Kosir raps forecast while jumping off a bridge

Almost a year ago, I wrote the “rapping weatherman” Nick Kosir - whose catchy rhymes had gone viral on YouTube - landed himself a big market gig in San Francisco. But after two days on the job, he walked away, fleeing for a position in the much more remote Twin Falls, Idaho. I hadn’t heard anything about Kosir since. But last night, he shot me an email, with a link to his latest rap - originating from a 500 foot bridge that he base jumps from . It’s gimmicky, but give him props for originality...

Heat wave and hot weather humor

The continuing heat wave, now toasting the East Coast, motivated me to open the pages of my notebook of hot weather humor. Perhaps a little levity will help you make it through the oppressive heat/humidity/haze (“triple H”) conditions. In that spirit, I submit some of my favorite hot weather jokes and humor. Please feel free to provide additional jokes, stories or videos in comments.

Priceless video from Hempfield, Pa. tornado

The tornado that touched down in Hempfield, Pennsylvania yesterday was serious. It damaged 90 homes and 30-35 homes are uninhabitable according to the Pittsburgh’s Post-Gazette. The National Weather Service is currently surveying the damage to assess its intensity. But adding some levity to the situation, is the play-by-play accompanying a home video of the storm.

How to cope with the heat: Tell a joke

Living through this summer for most is an uncomfortable, if not miserable experience. Short of moving to Alaska (or never leaving an air conditioned building), what to do? One way to cope is placing mind over matter -- imagine yourself, for example, standing near the North Pole atop the last piece of Arctic Ice wearing only a bathing suit while watching polar bears diving off surrounding ice flows. If that doesn't work, how about some good summer weather jokes?
