Muslim liberation theology on the march

Mass demonstrations for democracy have spread overnight from Tunisia to Egypt to Jordan and throughout the Muslim world in ways that parallel a similar spread of liberation movements in Latin America a generation ago.

Family values, the importance of placing the needs of real human beings before narrow political interests, a pro-life attitude towards immigration and the Church's preferential option for poor are all brought to bear in the US Conference of Catholic Bishops' teachings on how to address immigration.

Most of the Catholics asking to be married in the church today have been living together. Some are pregnant when they walk down the aisle. A new document on Catholic marriage shows the American bishops are paying attention to these changes.

Since Ms. O'Donnell categorizes herself as very Catholic, it would seem that she is wasting time to say the obvious fact that she's "not a witch." However, in Catholic history people called "witches" have become saints. It all depends on how "witch" is defined.

Taxes, tyranny and a Catholic Tea Party

Can a Catholic be a member of today's Tea Party? There are many versions of the Tea Party in the United States today but what they have in common is how they link taxation and tyranny. It may surprise some that the justification to rebel against taxation and tyranny is found in the writings of the 16th century Jesuit priest, Juan de Mariana (1536-1624). This first of the Catholic Tea Partyers, however, could teach the current movement a thing or two.

Why I Can't Be a Catholic Conservative

At the root of conservative close-mindedness is anti-intellectualism.

Pope Benedict, 'Geologian'

I think the pope is urging us not to limit our Catholic mission to merely "saving" souls and fetuses, but simultaneously must create a planet safe for human development

The Pope Meets Chardin

Benedict related the preservation of the planet to the survival of human life in the womb, making defense of all life a Catholic duty.

Obama and the "Infanticide" Lie

If Obama is guilty of infanticide for opposing mandated health care in the relatively few cases of abortion survivors, then isn’t McCain guilty of far worse by denying government mandated health care to 46 million Americans? I reject this logic

Bishops in Denial About Denying Communion?

Anthony Stevens-Arroyo | Are bishops so focused on Catholic values they misunderstand politics? Or are they so focused on politics they misunderstood Catholic values?

Abortion Never-Neverland

What circumstances would lead four Catholic Charities’ employees to arrange an abortion, when they must have known the Church’s opposition?

Is Obama a Secret Catholic?

Anthony Stevens-Arroyo | Obama has offered a theology of social activism consonant with Catholic teaching and Catholic Charities.

Sally Quinn: Mouse in the Tabernacle

Neither the Catholic League nor I can pretend to control God’s free gift of grace. It just may be that the Holy Spirit was blessing Sally Quinn that day, wisely leading her still further away from her once-professed atheism.

Catholics and Patriotism

Catholics in the U.S. are patriotic, but there was a time when being Catholic put a person under suspicion of not being American enough.

St. Anthony, Lost and Found

Saints – while they were still alive on earth – experienced the same ups and downs as we do: lost items, physical pains like sore throats, diminished eyesight, toothaches.

The Politics of Communion

We need to move beyond the canonical issue of whether bishops may deny communion to politicians, and ask if they should?

Joan of Arc and Hillary Clinton

One reason the phony accusation of “lesbian” stuck to Hillary Clinton is pants-suits. As bizarre as it sounds, there is a tradition in some religious groups that women wearing men’s pants have a problem with their sexual identity....

Obedience and Pfleger: Tough Love from the Church

Obama’s Catholic Problem

Obama must address the issues of abortion and stem cell research. A place to begin is praise for the Catholic Church in holding fast to pro-life principles before they were embraced by today’s right-wing Evangelicals.

Priests Working Part-Time, Short-Term

Why not expand the pool of priests by ordaining men for a definite period of time, say 7 year tours of ministry? It might be that celibacy would be accepted by more if it were not a life-long commitment.

About 'Catholic America'

I have become convinced that the best way to study religion is to view theology through a materialist prism. If that sounds too academic a premise, the common sense equivalent is simple: Study living religion! In my opinion, we cannot...
