Will Miley Cyrus survive her crossover attempt?

Make no mistake, Miley Cyrus is intentionally pushing her image into adult territory and positioning herself on the playing field with the likes of today's biggest female pop stars -- Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Christina Aguilera. But after years spent building up a wholesome image -- selling oneself as the kind of girl who parents of 13-year-olds wouldn't mind their daughters hanging with -- is it possible to shed those years of cred in favor of a decidedly edgy new persona? As mentioned in the Morning Mix, pictures of the 17-year-old popster performing over the weekend in Portugal have again caused an uproar (no doubt, the intention) and launched a debate about Miley's age appropriateness. Is young Miley leading her hordes of heretofore innocent tween fans into a hyper-sexualized zone where grabbing one's crotch and hitting a stripper pole are the natural next step once one graduates from Disney? Or...

Miley Cyrus opts out of college

Miley Cyrus. (AP) Don't look for Miley Cyrus walking the halls of academia this fall when scads of teens become college freshmen. As we shared in this morning's Mix, the 17-year-old graduating senior doesn't plan to go to college right now, though she is busy trying to shed her "Hannah Montana"-fueled Disney image and make the transition into adulthood in other ways. "My sister went to MTSU in Nashville, so I'd probably want to be there with all my friends, but I'm not gonna go to college right now," Cyrus said in a Monday interview with an Atlanta radio station. "I am a firm believer that you can go back at any age you want, because my grandma went back to college at 62 years old." But is deferring an education a good idea -- even if you are a tween sensation with a decent chance of transitioning into...

Miley Cyrus’s new video: Too much too young?

Miley Cyrus is now 17-and-a-half, so of course it’s time for her to step up that campaign to break away from her teenybopper image. I mean, the girl's got a career to think of and teen singing sensations are about as lasting as a set of braces. One day the Disney Channel-loving legions of tweens are all “We love Miley,” and the next they’re all like “Let’s kill Kim Kardashian cuz we luv Justin Bieber.” It’s a fickle market. In that spirit, Miley this week released a new video for the first single from her upcoming album. It’s called “Can’t Be Tamed,” but should perhaps be called “I Am Some Kind of Sexually Predatory Bird Woman (And Please Ignore the Fact That I’m Still Underage While I Grind Against This Guy).” A mouthful, but it would be more accurate. Have a watch: For those of you who can’t -- or...

Miley Cyrus demands our respect

There's nothing more annoying that being a 40-year-old serious actress trapped in a manufactured teen idol's body and facing nothing but pithy criticism from idiotic entertainment reporters and critics.

Insta-Poll: Miley's Mileage?

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me a third time and I'm starting to think that there may be more method than madness to Miley Cyrus's continuing parade of scantily-clad pix. Over the weekend, yet more DIY pix of the 15-year-old Disney star in her undies surfaced. And, on the heels of the Great Leibovitz Portrait Debate and Cyrus's previous homemade shots, well, one has to start wondering why pop Billy Ray doesn't take this girl's digicam and lock it in the family safe. Left: Annie Leibovitz's portrait of Miley Cyrus. Right: The June cover. (Images courtesy Vanity Fair) Of course, there's the merest chance that these photos are doctored, but the poses in the new pix echo earlier shots of Cyrus that later proved to be genuine. And with a new album due out in July and a memoir set to hit...
