Alleged speed hump killer's trial postponed

The neighborhood dispute between David A. Patton and Stephen A. Carr in Springfield, over placing a speed hump in front of Carr's house on Field Master Drive, first erupted in June, when the men had a physical argument in Carr's driveway which also ended in Patton's arrest. The misdemeanor assault trial for Patton was set for Thursday. But with the complaining witness, Carr, now dead, prosecutors asked a Fairfax County judge to postpone the case for two months. The trial was rescheduled by Fairfax General District Court Judge William Minor for Nov. 16.

Lawyer arrested again on child porn charges

A lawyer from Fairfax County, who was arrested last month for allegedly paying a teenaged girl to have sex with him while he photographed the encounter, was arrested again Thursday and charged with ten more counts of possessing child pornography. Joshua J. Gessler, 41, was an associate with the prominent Washington law firm of Arnold & Porter in its Tysons Corner office. He was arrested Aug. 9 after a Fairfax woman contacted police and reported that her 15-year-old daughter was engaged in prostitution. Court records showed that Fairfax detectives used the girl's e-mail account to track down Gessler, and that he allegedly sent numerous sexually explicit photos of the girl to her.

Court upholds tracking suspects with GPS

A Fairfax County man, a convicted sex offender being tracked by police as a suspect in a string of sexual assaults, did not have his rights violated when Fairfax police secretly placed a global positioning system (GPS) device on his vehicle without a warrant, the Virginia Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday. After a string of 11 attacks on women in eastern Fairfax County in 2008, many in the Falls Church area, detectives zeroed in on David L. Foltz because he lived in the area and was previously convicted of rape. He had served 17 years in prison and was released in 2007.

Firefighters hurt as ladder hits wire

Three Fairfax County firefighters were injured Wednesday morning, and power was lost to 31,000 Northern Virginia homes and businesses, when a ladder on a fire engine struck two power lines in the Lorton area of southern Fairfax. The firefighters were doing a weekly test of the ladder on the truck at the Crosspointe station, just off Route 123 on Hampton Road, about 8:40 a.m., Fairfax fire spokesman Dan Schmidt said. As the firefighters were extending the ladder near the station, it struck two lines and shot a bolt of high voltage electricity through the truck, along the concrete driveway and into the station, sparking a short fire at the electrical box, Schmidt said.

The former pastor of a Fairfax County church pleaded guilty Monday morning to molesting two boys who were members of his church in the 1990s, and Fairfax prosecutors agreed to a deal in which the man would spend no time in jail. Shooting victim clears legal hurdle

A man who was shot five times outside a Fairfax County police station two years ago cleared his first legal hurdle, in his attempt to sue Fairfax and a police employee, when a judge ruled Friday that a hearing should be held to determine how severely incapacitated he was in the months after the shooting. Najib Gerdak, 28, was standing in front of the Franconia district station on Feb. 2, 2008, when he was shot five times by Jeffrey S. Koger. Gerdak said he went into the station to ask for help, but a civilian employee at the front desk sent him back outside, where he was shot. He said he then waited more than 30 minutes for an ambulance. He survived, but suffered permanent physical damage.

Annandale man guilty in wife's murder

An Annandale man, who fled to Mexico after his wife was found stabbed to death behind their home in 2007, was convicted of second-degree murder Wednesday evening by a Fairfax County jury, and the jury on Thursday imposed a prison sentence of 30 years. Matilde A. Cruz, 57, had separated from her husband, Jose Luis Cruz, 56, and moved out of their home in the 6500 block of Pinecrest Court. But police said their 18-year-old son found her stabbed to death in her car, which had crashed behind the family's house, on Dec. 20, 2007.

Charges dropped in Reid's wife's crash

A Fairfax County judge on Wednesday dismissed a reckless driving charge against a truck driver who rear-ended a minivan carrying Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid's wife and daughter, ruling there was no proof the truck driver had done anything wrong. Landra G. Reid, 69, suffered a broken neck, broken back and broken nose in the March 11 accident on northbound Interstate 95 near the Fairfax County Parkway, and Lana R. Barringer, 49, had a neck injury and facial lacerations. In a traffic pileup near the "mixing bowl," their car was struck by an 18-wheel tractor-trailer driven by Alan W, Snader, 59, of Franklin, Ohio.

Fairfax rapist sentenced to 32 years in prison

A man who pleaded guilty to breaking into a home in the Tysons Corner area and raping a woman in 1987 has been sentenced to 32 years in prison by a Fairfax County judge. The victim told police she was attacked by a man who wore a mask and gloves. Last year, Fairfax cold case sex crimes detectives revisited the May 1987 incident, on Lisle Avenue in the Pimmit Hills neighborhood and resubmitted DNA to a national database. The DNA matched a man then living in Pennsylvania, and in November, police arrested John Q. Kinsey, 49, on charges of rape and burglary with intent to rape.
