A cold p.m. commute

In the District, drivers were shrugging off the few flakes that began to fall Thursday morning, but north and west of the city communities were contending with widespread impacts due to snow and ice. Traffic on Interstate 270 North ground to a halt as a five-vehicle accident blocked the lanes at Route 109. From Clarksburg south to Germantown traffic wasn't moving. From Sam Eig Highway north drivers were contending with conditions that blocked lanes and left cars skating around the pavement. Accidents also circled the Baltimore Beltway, with an overturned tractor-trailer delaying traffic further near Eastern Boulevard. The Interstate 70 and 270 corridors were lined with accidents as snow passed through the area at midday. Snow that found little purchase to the south made roads through Frederick and other communities slippery enough to cause travel headaches. Medians and other areas were covered in a light dusting of flakes.

The week ahead for traffic, transit

Commuters in the D.C. area will be sharing the roads today with many drivers returning from their Thanksgiving holidays, those who couldn't stand to deal with the Delaware toll plaza or other obstacles on Sunday. The region's highway departments will gradually put the orange cones back in place and the road work will resume. Join me at noon for our weekly online chat, and we'll review the holiday getaway and look forward to what December has in store. Meanwhile, here's a look about some of the issues commuters will face this week.

The week ahead for traffic, transit

Travelers departing for their Thanksgiving holidays at midweek are likely to encounter some bad weather, the Capital Weather Gang says. The highway departments should have pulled up their orange barrels by Wednesday afternoon, but that still leaves the concrete barriers and the lane shifts. Many others will stick around the D.C. area and start their holiday shopping at local malls on Friday. So today, we'll concentrate the look ahead on the long distance and local travel obstacles connected to the holiday. We'll have much more on this as the week evolves.

Timing Metro travel this weekend

The clocks fall back an hour at 2 a.m. Sunday as Daylight Saving Time ends, but for Metrorail riders, that's the easy part of the clock-watching this weekend. Metro turns back its clocks along with everyone else. All the homeward bound partiers need to remember is that Metrorail will continue operating till 3 a.m. Eastern Standard Time. The trickier part of weekend transit planning will be tracking the train schedules late Friday and early Saturday, as Metro prepares to shut down segments of the Orange and Blue lines for a big weekend maintenance project.

Slowdown on Red Line

Many Red Line riders think the trains are slowing down between Bethesda and Friendship Heights. It's not their imagination. Metro inspectors have identified a section of track in that area that needs repair. That's not an unusual condition in the aging rail system. The transit authority schedules repairs, and until they can be completed, orders trains to slow down as they pass through the zone as a safety precaution.

There's very little in the D.C. region's 2010 election campaigning that amounts to transportation politics, but Tuesday's voting will generate some traffic issues of its own.

The weekend and beyond

You can rally on Saturday, you can run on Sunday. You can just dodge the resulting traffic. Do stay alert for the trick-or-treaters on Halloween, and don't party too hard in Georgetown. Whatever activity you're planning this very busy weekend, you'll be doing it in clear weather, but the temperatures will turn cooler. Here's a guide to planning the weekend's travel in the D.C. area.

The Dulles Metrorail construction project plans to close westbound Interstate 66 at the Dulles Connector Road (Route 267) overnight tonight, Friday and Saturday. The workers in this zone are building the large concrete structures, called straddle bents, that will cross the roadway between piers. Switch problem caused Red line delays

Metro spokesman Steven Taubenkibel says there was a track switch malfunction between New York Avenue and Rhode Island Avenue this morning. I know platforms were jammed during the morning rush in the direction of Shady Grove, and the trains were far off schedule. Unlike kickabout, who commented below, I heard no announcements in the station or aboard the train. When I reached the platform at Silver Spring at 8 a.m. it was obvious there was a problem. The platform is not usually so crowded at that hour. Most of us let the first train go by, because it was so crowded, and waited about six minutes for the next.

Rallies, roadwork and rail delays

After this week's super soaking, the weekend should look pretty good to travelers, with partial sunshine and mild temperatures. An usually large number of events are scheduled for the National Mall. St. Michael's hosts a nautical crowd for the Mid-Atlantic Small Craft Festival on Saturday, while foodies will visit the Taste of Bethesda. Baseball has left D.C. for the year, but the Orioles will be finishing the season at Camden Yards. At 12:30 p.m. Sunday, the Capitals play in the Verizon Center. Here's my list of the likely sources for crowds and delays this weekend and beyond.
