Where to live for good commute?

Q. I'm moving to the D.C. area. Your chats put the fear of God, gods, and other supreme beings into me about either being stuck at the mercy of a Metro transit system that seems more off than on or roadways that would leave me in the car more than enjoying my life. I want to rely on public transportation, so outlying communities are out. So, where in the D.C. metro area can a person get a home in a nice/safe area, good schools, and a commute that won't kill the commuter?

The week ahead in traffic, transit

Several of the many events that mark us as the nation's capital have the potential to slow travel this week. One, the annual March for Life to protest the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision will be held today. The other, the State of the Union address, is scheduled for Tuesday evening. The forecast for local travel looks pretty good -- unless you count late Tuesday into Wednesday, when the Capital Weather Gang predicts a storm will pass through, though it's still uncertain what type of precipitation we're in for.

The week ahead in traffic, transit

We often talk about the commuting surge known as September Shock. Is there such a thing as January Shock, a mini-surge this week as many travelers go back to work after their vacations and students return to school? One shock for commuters will be the 25 cent toll increase at the main plaza on the Dulles Toll Road. Across the region, the orange cones and barrels will be back in place as road work resumes. Drivers along the New York Avenue corridor should be particularly attentive for new work. Here are some highlights.

This may be the quietest week of the year on the roads and rails, with schools closed and so many people either staying put at home or still of on a holiday break. "Weather permitting" will be the governing phrase concerning a lot of this week's road construction plans. Then on Thursday, the orange cones will get pulled up while workers and travelers share a break for the New Year's weekend.

The week ahead for traffic, transit

Friday is a holiday for federal workers and many other people. Expect a Christmas getaway on the highways, at Union Station and the D.C. region's airports on Thursday. The Capital Weather Gang is giving us a heads up about the possibility of a winter storm late Christmas Eve and into Christmas Day, but it's still early. We can talk more about getaways, as well as other traffic and transit issues during my online chat at noon.

Metro has become the system Washingtonians love to hate, but between continuous complaints about escalator performance, infrequent service and unhelpful customer service, it's easy to forget what the system doesn't seem to be plagued with: Large rodents in larger numbers.

Circulator ridership, and subsidy, grows

Not long after Metro figures showed that Metrobus ridership has declined significantly in recent years, a new online dashboard from overseers of the Circular bus system allows users to track metrics such as ridership and safety, and it shows that ridership has increased significantly. But costs were nearly $4.30 per ride for the Waterfront line, and the Smithsonian-National Gallery loop recouped only 6 percent of what it cost to run via rider fares, the tool also showed.

Metro: L'Enfant escalator brakes failed

A preliminary investigation into the escalator failure at L'Enfant Plaza Station followed last weekend's Jon Stewart/Stephen Colbert rally, when the system broke a 19-year record for Saturday ridership, has determined that the escalator brakes failed, causing the unit to speed up and dumping the riders at the bottom.

VRE sets ridership record

Virginia Railway Express set a single-day ridership record Wednesday, with more than 19,300 passengers using the commuter rail service. VRE officials said the 19,322 passenger trips on Wednesday surpassed the record set in February 2010 by nearly 250 trips. Overall ridership for the first quarter of fiscal 2011, which started July 1, is at roughly 1.1 million passenger trips, up 84,000 passenger trips over the first quarter of fiscal 2010. The increased ridership equates to 2.5 million fewer passenger trip miles traveled on Virginia highways, according to VRE.

Car Free Day opens horizons

Figuring out how to get around isn't an ideology. I always recommend that people figure out what method of going about works best for them, and then follow that course. I urge governments to provide people with choices. So to me, Wednesday's Car Free Day is about raising consciousness concerning choice, not about pushing people out of their cars. So I hope people who usually drive will consider options that could save them money and stress. You don't have to take a sudden and lasting plunge into a completely different commuting style. But do think through the alternatives of transit, biking, walking or telecommuting -- even once in a while. As Nicholas Ramfos of the Commuter Connections program says, "Just try it."

Want to rent out your car when you don't need it? A four-month-old London company, WhipCar, hooks up vehicle owners with people who want to rent private cars. Fast Company.com calls it a "peer-to-peer car-hire scheme" that seeks to compete with car-share companies like Zipcar, by making rental cars more available on weekends and in less populated areas, including smaller neighborhoods, where car-sharing firms aren't located.

On Monday, if the plan goes according to schedule, commuters will find the left-center lane blocked as they head for either 14th Street or the Southeast-Southwest Freeway. That means the work zone will have moved one lane to the left. After a year-long phase in which the far-right lane was the only one blocked off, the bridge rehabilitation project has moved out fairly rapidly across the span. The current work zone was set up in July.d

Join me for traffic, transit forum

Tim Ralston of Kensington, writing in my Dr. Gridlock column on Sunday, said this about the Metro board: "I don't know what the answer is, but increasingly, I am less impressed by the Metro board and wonder if it is the most effective body to take the system in the fresh, new direction that is desperately needed."

Va. Rep. to DC: Leave slugs alone

Don't mess with the slugs (or those who drive them). That's what U.S. Rep. Gerald E. Connolly (D-Va.) said in a letter to D.C. Police--who said they agreed--after reports of ticketing slugging commuters made headlines last month. Connolly, a first-term congressman from Northern Virginia facing re-election this fall, contacted D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier following a WJLA/ABC 7 report last month that suggested police were targeting slugging commuters, handing out $100 tickets.
