Airport shuttle probed in crashes

Multiple police agencies are investigating several Monday morning crashes that allegedly involved a "SuperShuttle" airport van. Virginia State Police, Arlington County Police and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police are coordinating efforts into a review of the incidents. According to Virginia State Police, a trooper was called to investigate three hit-and-runs at 9:24 a.m. that occurred on Interstate 66 westbound near mile marker 70. Police said the SuperShuttle van "twice sideswiped the passenger side of a Dodge Charger," "rear-ended a Chrysler Pacifica" and struck a taxi from behind. Both the taxi and the Pacifica ran off the road, with the taxi striking a guardrail and the Pacifica ending up in a ditch, police said.

Focused on older driver safety

This week is Older Driver Safety Awareness Week, according to the American Occupational Therapy Association, which founded the activity with the goal of ensuring that "older adults remain active in the community ... with the confidence that transportation will not be the barrier to strand them at home." The National Transportation Safety Board says that within 15 years people 65 years of age or older will make up more than 20 percent of the driving population. The NTSB held a forum last month to look at issues related to the growing number of older drivers. Several organizations have endorsed the week, including AAA and AARP.

VDOT readies for winter

Branco Vlacich, part of a team at the Virginia Department of Transportation that 's responsible for clearing 17,679 lane miles in the D.C. region, displayed the National Weather Service forecast he received for the upcoming season: "equal chances for above-,near-, or below-normal temperatures and precipitation," it said. This is what drives the plow planners nuts. They have to be ready for anything, while spending taxpayer money prudently. Vlacich, speaking this morning to a group of local officials and their representatives who wanted to be briefed on winter preparations, said that further review with forecasters suggested we'll see fewer big snows but more ice storms. Here's what else will be different this winter.

Fairfax HOV ramps to open for all

U.S. Rep. Gerald E. Connolly (D-Va.) took credit for the openings, with a press release noting he "convinced the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration that the change would help reduce traffic congestion." Connolly wrote a May letter to federal transportation authorities, arguing the opening of the HOV ramps was a "common sense approach to improving traffic flow in the I-66 corridor."

Say what you will about the danger of distracted drivers on cellphones, those phones never will wave a bushy tail, demand a pat, bark at a squirrel or bite anybody. Dogs will, and 31 percent of dog owners admitted in a national survey that their dogs are a distraction on the highway.

Jonas Bros. tour on safe texting

The Jonas Brothers are traveling the country over the next two months, but this tour isn't just about bringing their special brand of pop to fans -- although they are doing that, too. The Jonases have joined the campaign to stop distracted driving as part of the "X the TXT" campaign started by Allstate -- Jordin Sparks was in D.C. in the spring promoting it -- and they're taking their message to minor league ballparks.

Pick a parking sign in D.C.

The District's varied rules on parking can be confusing enough as drivers move from place to place across the city, but this letter writer shows me that even in just one spot they can be baffling.

Stopping at dark intersections

When power outages occur and traffic signals fail, I've often urged drivers to treat darkened intersections as all-way stops. Now, I see John B. Townsend II at AAA Mid-Atlantic is noting that Maryland has no law requiring that.

New parking zones in D.C.

Back in January, when the District was raising the prices at meters, drivers said that what they really hated about the higher fees was lugging around all those quarters. Since then, the city has been working on a variety of payment methods: pay-by-space, pay-by-license plate and pay-by-phone.

A surreal streetsweep scene

Between midnight and daybreak, street sweeping equipment will attempt to tackle sand cleanup in the area bounded by 7th Street on the east, 16th Street on the west, V Street on the north and Rhode Island Avenue on the south.  Six thousands gallons for water-soluble degreaser may be sprayed. Parked cars will be worked around, a Department of Public Works employee wrote to residents.
