MARC development moves along

Plans to transform the parking lot at the Savage MARC train station in Howard County into a small community of homes, offices, stores and a hotel are moving closer to fruition, part of Maryland's long effort to redevelop mass-transit parking lots. Construction has not begun on any state-approved "transit-oriented development" projects, though a garage was built at the Owings Mills Metro station in Baltimore County. State transportation officials said that one project proposed at the State Center office complex in downtown Baltimore is expected to get under way this winter.

MARC train disruption cleared

Update 6:13pm: The passengers are safely back to the station and boarding the next train. Original post:Penn Line train 436, scheduled to depart at 5:30pm towards Perryville, broke down minutes after leaving Union Station and is without power near the New York Avenue Metro. After repairs were unsuccessful, a rescue locomotive was attached, and MARC plans to have that locomotive tow it back to Union Station.

German train reaches 122 degrees

And riders on the infamous overheated MARC trains thought their experience was rough. Even as MARC trains continue to be plagued by delays stemming from overheated equipment and the overheated customers that can result when a train breaks down--MARC created a Web page titled MARC Train 538 Incident Response, and Amtrak announced today it would distribute bottled watter at Union Station on hot days--other railroads are undergoing similar woes. German authorities are looking into whether Deutsche Bahn "negligently caused bodily harm" by continuing a train's journey after its air conditioning broke, the German publication The Local reported this week.

MARC and VRE train troubles

Alerts from MARC don't indicate it, but a rider who brought train delays to our attention yesterday reports that MARC cancelled his 4:40 train, Penn 432, today "due to a transformer issue" and made the 5:20 train, typically is an express to BWI, a local. Those expected to arrive on that train would be behind schedule, and the train will likely be crowded. The 428 and 450 numbered trains will be 15 minutes late.

20-30 min. MARC delays

Surprise--MARC trains out of Washington are running 20 to 30 minutes late this evening due to power problems at Union Station and Landover stations; single-tracking near New Carrolton; and congestion on the Camden Line, MARC reports. Rider Kevin Scott tells us his 4:40 train left Union Station forty minutes past its scheduled departure. "They've communicated well but that doesn't help us move!" he wrote. CSX issued heat orders for the Brunswick/Camden Lines this afternoon, too. The overhead power lines are highly sensitive to heat, and this summer's weather has repeatedly pushed the system past its max.
