NTSB to hold forum on aging drivers

The National Transportation Safety Board is planning a public forum on aging drivers for next week. According to NTSB Chairman Deborah A.P. Hersman, "there are more than 30 million licensed drivers in the U.S. who are 65 years of older, and in just 15 years, this age group of drivers will comprise than 20 percent of the entire U.S. driving population. "The NTSB has a particular interest in learning how to reduce injury risk in car accidents for drivers in this age category," she said in a statement.

NTSB: Transportation fatalities fall

Transportation deaths in the United States decreased by about 9 percent from 2008 to 2009, according to data released by the National Transportation Safety Board. The preliminary figures include highway, rail, aviation, pipline and marine fatalities. The total in 2008 was 39,569 and fell to 35,928 in 2009, the NTSB said. "While statistics show that transportation fatalities have declined this past year," said NTSB Chairman Deborah A. P. Hersman, "we continue to see far too many accidents in all segments of the transportation community. There is still much work to do to prevent the loss of life on our roads, rails, waterways, and skies."

NTSB releases Metro crash pictures

As part of its public docket on the June 2009 Red Line crash, the National Transportation Safety Board released images last week from another Metro accident. The photographs show the damage caused to trains at a Northern Virginia rail yard on Nov. 29 when one six-car train crashed into another that was parked. The crash at the West Falls Church yard injured the train operator and two rail car cleaners who were aboard the parked train.
