Meeting on funding Tysons roads

The Metrorail extension to Loudoun County Airport, which includes four stops in Tysons Corner, is meant to reduce congestion in the traffic-choked job center. But in Tysons, officials say, the automobile will never become obsolete. Fairfax County officials have estimated that hundreds of millions of dollars will be needed to build a new street grid and other road upgrades for people who will still travel cars.

NoVa officials discuss streetcar needs

Transportation officials in Arlington and Fairfax counties are trying to decide on features for the Columbia Pike streetcar line as they begin working on environmental documents and federal funding applications. The five-mile planned route from Pentagon City to Skyline in Fairfax County will need about 14 streetcars, street-level platforms, the possibility for people to enter the cars from both sides simultaneously, and the ability to collect fares at points along the line, said Steve Del Giudice, Arlington's transit bureau chief, to members of the Northern Virginia Streetcar Coalition Thursday night. Transportation officials are still trying to work out issues surrounding overhead power lines, locations for six power stations and a maintenance facility and "how to integrate those in the community," he said.

An advisory group of Alexandria citizens and officials put together a list of demands Thursday night for a new transit study focusing on three busy corridors: Beauregard and Van Dorn streets; Duke Street and Eisenhower Avenue; and Route 1 and Washington Street. Any system studied for these areas must be faster, reliable and more convenient than a car, without being too noisy, cause vibrations or impacting the quality of life and character in each neighborhood it passes through, said members of the High Capacity Transitway Corridor Work Group.

Report: Rigid formulas handcuff VDOT

Over the course of 12 audits, 17,000 man-hours and more than a million dollars, reviewers have consistently come to the same conclusion about the Virginia Department of Transportation: In the words of a report posted yesterday on the watchdog journalism site Old Dominion Watchdog, "VDOT is like a high-maintenance girlfriend and the general assembly an overbearing father." That's because, according to public and private audits funded by the department, the state legislature and others, longstanding formulas determine very narrowly where it may spend its money, even if department officials feel they have urgent priorities.
