Weekend warning for Telegraph Road interchange

The Wilson Bridge project plans to spend this weekend working on one of the most time-consuming tasks in its remaining mission to rebuild the Capital Beltway’s Telegraph Road interchange. Crews must dismantle and reconstruct the bridge over the railroad tracks, a job that’s not scheduled to be complete until fall 2012.

The weekend and beyond

Our solid block of great weather crumbles just in time for the weekend, the Capital Weather Gang says. Rain is very likely on Saturday and Sunday, and then only slightly less likely through mid-week.

The weekend and beyond

There’s a chance of a shower on Mother’s Day, the Capital Weather Gang says, but travelers should find the going relatively easy this weekend. The Virginia Gold Cup races are Saturday at Great Meadow, The Plains. For transportation buffs, Saturday is Space Day at the National Air and Space Museum on the Mall, and a little north at Union Station, it’s National Train Day.

The weekend and beyond

Whether you’re heading for one of the Nationals-Giants games at Nationals Park, Saturday’s Annapolis Cup croquet match at St. John’s College or Sunday afternoon's Cinco de Mayo Festival at the National Mall’s Sylvan Theater, the Capital Weather Gang projects a really nice weekend for travelers. But watch out for some transportation challenges on the roads and rails.

The weekend and beyond

It’s a holiday in the District, the hockey playoffs return to Verizon Center tonight, the Nationals are home and Metro has ended its lull in weekend track work. Look for lots of activity in the major highway work zones as well, as well as congestion in Foggy Bottom because of the annual spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank.

The weekend and beyond

The two-week Cherry Blossom Festival starts Saturday, somewhat in defiance of the chilly, gray and potentially rainy — even snowy — weather forecast for the weekend. Saturday’s National Marathon means extensive traffic congestion in the middle of the District throughout the morning and early afternoon. Metro will open an hour early, at 6 a.m., to accommodate the marathon participants. Meanwhile, the circus is at the Verizon Center all weekend. Here’s what travelers need to know for the weekend and beyond.

The weekend and beyond

This week's weather has played havoc with road construction schedules throughout the D.C. region. It was too cold for some work, while in other areas, operations were suspended for the safety of the crews and drivers. That work will start to pick up again over the weekend and next week. After Friday's light snow, travelers will have patches of sun and moderate daytime temperatures through the weekend.

The weekend and beyond

Travelers dodged the snow, but they won't escape the cold and wind in the D.C. area this weekend. There's not much scheduled in the way of outdoor activities that might interfere with getting around. At Verizon Center, the Wizards play the Phoenix Suns at 7 p.m. Friday and the Boston Celtics at 7 p.m. Saturday. Metro has a more modest program of track work this weekend. There are no major road work programs scheduled for the daytime, but there are some lane and ramp closings.

The weekend and beyond

This long holiday weekend includes two major transportation projects that will affect both transit users and drivers. Metro needs to replace four track switches at the Foggy Bottom Station, a big project that will require closing the station for the entire weekend. Meanwhile, drivers should avoid the Capital Beltway's Telegraph Road interchange, where lanes and ramps will be closed as part of the Wilson Bridge project.

The weekend and beyond

On the first full weekend of the new year, road crews and transit workers will be busy, despite the cold weather. They won't let up in the coming work week either. Shake off that holiday lethargy and get ready to deal with the renewed energy of the crews that will be blocking lanes and closing stretches of track. Here are some highlights of what's ahead.

The weekend and beyond

It's the last weekend for Christmas shopping, so be prepared for crowded conditions around the malls. There may also be some boomlets of holiday getaway traffic on Friday evening and Saturday morning among the lucky ones who are on vacation during the coming week. This is also the last weekend of the year for Metro track work delays. Riders may also encounter police who want to search their property before they board the trains and buses.

The weekend and beyond

Your weekend travel will be done in cold weather, with rain on Sunday, says the Capital Weather Gang. That won't stop people from checking out the many holiday light displays, including the one at the National Zoo or the lighted boat parade in Annapolis. Leesburg is holding its holiday parade on Saturday morning. In this cold weather, there aren't a great number of work zones or big events to slow down travel, but there seem to be enough of them in strategic places to get in the way of your holiday outings. Here are some highlights.

The weekend and beyond

Whether you're heading for a Night at the Newseum, the BB&T basketball classic or just out buying a tree, bundle up for your travels in the D.C. area this weekend. The Capital Weather Gang says it will be cold and increasingly windy. Late-season paving projects are slowing down as the temperatures get colder, but there's still plenty of road work in the region, and Metro workers will be out on the Red and Orange lines. Next week, watch out for the lighting of the National Tree on the Ellipse, an annual event that puts commuters in a Grinch-like mood.
