AP program isn't all it's cracked up to be -- study

A new study from Stanford University that reviews research on the Advanced Placement program -- including about how much benefit students get from it when they reach college -- is not accurate.

Teacher questions value of AP program

A teacher who taught AP government questions whether all AP courses really make high school students more prepared for college than they would have been if they took other courses.

AP Courses: How many do colleges want?

I’ve just started researching college admissions in depth and already I'm about to answer a question with the same response that annoys me so much from college admissions directors. (Let me apologize now.) A reader posed this question: How many Advanced Placement courses should a student take in high school to go to college? The answer: “It depends.” On what?

Dear Jay .... About that ‘Challenge Index’ of yours

Dear Mr. Mathews, For some time now, I have quietly cursed your Challenge Index. (Okay, maybe not so quietly). You know the one I mean--the annual exercise you undertake in which you make a list of the country’s “most challenging” public high schools by calculating this ratio: the number of Advanced Placement and/or International Baccalaureate tests taken by all students at a school, divided by the number of graduating seniors. ... But I've had some new thoughts on the matter....
