Newtown school district seeks standardized testing waiver

The Newtown, Conn., Board of Education voted to ask the federal government to exempt its public schools from taking some mandated standardized tests because of the trauma suffered by the community from the fatal shootings of 20 children and six teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary last month.

Michelle Obama's advice on talking to young people about Newtown

Teachers unions reject arming educators in schools

The National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers, with a total of some 4.5 million members, said in a joint statement that arming teachers won't make schools safer/. What will, they say, are mental health services, bullying prevention and gun safety legislation.
