Universal preschool: Important but no panacea

Increasing the number of youngsters in preschool is a good thing. But improving quality in programs is another, and the content and direction of preschools will be influenced by ideological fervor.

Do we need preschool graduation ceremonies?

Spend a little time watching videos of pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students at graduation ceremonies, or, to save time, just take my word for it, but it's time to call a halt to these events.

Why it is so important to read aloud to your kids

I want to share this email I received from a reading specialist in response to my recent blogpost about parents pushing academics on preschool kids, who actually learn best through well-designed play.... Said Barbara Bosworth: "If we want to change America, we need to change how parents read to their children."

Tutors for 3-year-olds and more preschool nuttiness

It is well known that many preschool parents have become super anxious trying to give their kids a leg up on kindergarten, but I didn't realize just how nutty things have become until I talked to several dozen preschool program directors.
