Caps approach philanthropy as a group effort

One of the greatest aspects of the Washington Capitals philanthropic initiatives is the large number of players who participate.

Capitals are hearing crickets at Verizon Center

The Caps now sit second in their division, just a point ahead of the Jets, and an unimpressive seventh in the Eastern Conference. But I don’t need to tell you how the Caps are doing — you’re hearing it everywhere, and if you’re at games, you might be feeling it, too.

Dale Hunter is Capitals storybook choice, but is he the right one?

I can’t help feeling like the Caps may have gone for the storybook choice in replacing Bruce Boudreau with Dale Hunter, not the sensible one. Hunter’s lack of NHL coaching experience is a serious concern.

Why Bruce Boudreau had to go

Bruce Boudreau could never pound home the team concept to the freelancing Young Guns, who thought they were entitled to greatness without having to evolve their games or buy in to a team concept.

Capitals say goodnight to Bruce Boudreau

Bruce Boudreau was a great coach, and there’s really not much more you could have asked from him as a fan. But there comes a point when none of that matters anymore. It was simply time to make a change.

A concession on Capitals benching, scratching and bag skates

Though I’m a fan of discipline, I’m also a believer that the Caps’ players wouldn’t be where they are without extraordinary self-discipline. It may be time to sit back and let them play for awhile, and see whether the kinks work themselves out.

Inconsistent Capitals are approaching first crisis of the season

I think I can be pretty safe in saying that Tuesday’s Capitals-Stars Caps game was a complete and utter dud on all levels. And the uneven performances have been coming with increasing frequency over the last couple weeks.

Capitals fast start an encouraging sign of things to come

It’s difficult to write about a hockey team in November, because it’s still so early in the season. And what makes this Capitals team even more difficult to write about is that I still have no idea what to make of it.

Caps fans rock the... purple?

Seeing Bruce Boudreau step out behind the bench sporting a limited edition purple tie in honor of Hockey Fights Cancer was a tip-off that Saturday was going to be a very special night. The Caps went on to raise $28,225 in a silent auction benefiting Flashes of Hope.

I spent all summer wondering whether any amount of truth in his criticism could justify Matt Bradley’s comments about Alex Semin, and trying to decide whether Bradley was the same guy I always thought he was. Now, seeing his apology, I realize he’s more that guy than ever.

Capitals are winning ugly early, and that’s just fine

The Capitals shouldn’t be playing their best hockey right now, and this is the time, in early October, to work out all the kinks and wrinkles and get things together for when that time does come. If they can grind out wins while not playing at their best, so much the better.

Capitals 2011-12 season preview: Talk is cheap for Ovechkin and the Young Guns; it’s time to back it up

Washington’s 2003 playoff series with Tampa Bay was an all-too-familiar nightmare as the Caps coughed up a 2-0 lead to lose the series and help springboard the Bolts to the 2004 Cup. Now, eight years later, the Capitals finally have their chance to settle the score.
