'I Am Number Four': The trailer looks like something (or things) we've seen before

Like many people, you probably are struggling to nail down your plans for Feb. 18, 2011. Well, you're in luck. A new trailer for "I Am Number Four" -- a sci-fi thriller based on the book by James Frey and Jobie Hughes -- provides a hint of what may await on that Friday two months from now, assuming that you choose to see "I Am Number Four" on the day it opens. But check out the new trailer and take a look yourself. And check the blog in coming days, too; an interview with "127 Hours" director Danny Boyle -- the same filmmaker who won several Academy Awards and other prizes for "Slumdog Millionaire" -- will be published here in the near future....

'True Grit' trailer: Three reasons the clip makes us want to see this Coen Brothers film

A short trailer for the Coen Brothers' version of "True Grit" has arrived online, revealing three things (at least) that reinforce the film's must-see status. 1. The epic, Western sweep and gorgeous cinematography are reminiscent of the Coens' "No Country for Old Men." No surprise, since the director of photography is Roger Deakins, a frequent Coen collaborator who also set the visual tone for the aforementioned Anton Chigurh saga. 2. Matt Damon appears in his first major Coen Brothers role -- and he's brought a mean pair of sideburns and a killer 'stache with him. 3. Best of all, Jeff Bridges -- aka the Dude -- is deliciously scraggly as U.S. Marshal Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn, the role played by John Wayne in the 1969 original. He doesn't have a White Russian in his hand. But he has an eye patch. And that's almost as good. Watch and enjoy --...

'The Tourist': Johnny Depp, meet Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp have never appeared in a movie together. That all changes with "The Tourist," the spy thriller/romance in which Jolie seduces Depp, but for reasons that are not based purely on physical attraction. The trailer is now circulating online and provides our first glimpse of what director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck has described as "incredible chemistry" between the two stars. It's a bit difficult to assess that chemistry in the trailer, though; many of the scenes feature close-ups of an impossibly sultry Jolie, or Depp seeming confused and/or panic-stricken. Still, the notion of Edward Scissorhands and Lara Croft, together at last, is pretty intriguing. Take a look and share your reaction to this cinematic pairing -- to be seen in December on the big screen -- in our comments section....

A look at the 'Hereafter' trailer

A film about a psychic, that focuses on the afterlife and features Bryce Dallas Howard in a supporting role. I must be talking about an M. Night Shyamalan movie, right? Wrong. Actually, "Hereafter" -- whose trailer recently debuted online -- was directed by Clint Eastwood, stars Matt Damon and looks like it has potential, despite at least one special effect that a couple of YouTube commenters rather uncharitably compared to "2012." But take a look and decide for yourself. The films opens Oct. 22 (just in time for Halloween) and I can promise this much: unlike this Friday's "Devil," this one did not spring from the mind of Mr. Shyamalan....

'Piranha 3D' makes a bid for Best Picture

We've already established that "Inception" has a lock on at least a few Academy Award nominations. But now another summer movie is coming to theaters that just might threaten the Oscar prospects for Christopher Nolan's dreamscape thriller. Okay, not really. But Funny or Die has posted an amusing video (with, of course, some NSFW language) in which several cast members from "Piranha 3D" attempt to make a case for their multidimensional bloodbath's award-season prospects. In the process, they raise some valid questions. Given the amount of CGI in "Piranha 3D," why not nominate it for best animated feature? Do the Oscar organizers really want young people to watch the telecast and, if so, why do they continue to make the show so [bleep]y and boring? Why can't we change the name of Cheetos to Paul Scheer-tos? Why, I ask you?...

'I'm Still Here' trailer finally reveals that we still don't know what's going on with Joaquin Phoenix

The trailer for "I'm Still Here" -- the Casey Affleck-directed documentary that's supposed to finally explain Joaquin Phoenix's bizarre attempt to become a hip-hop artist and speak unintelligibly on talk shows -- has arrived online. And after watching it, it's now very, very clear that ... we still don't know what the deal is with Joaquin Phoenix. Is he serious about ditching acting to bust rhymes? Has he cracked up just enough to make him think that his hipster-meets-homeless-dude appearance is working for him? Or was all of this a well-orchestrated, impressively lengthy attempt at performance art? Option C is certainly the most likely at this point. The trailer gives off such a "Joaquin-as-serious-artist-on-a-journey" vibe that it's hard not to laugh. And laughter may very likely be what Affleck and Phoenix intended all along. We'll know for sure when the movie is released Sept. 10. Until then, I did learn...

From 'Kitty Galore' to 'Yogi Bear': Vote for the most horrific family movie trailer

"Toy Story 3" has spoiled us. So have movies like "How to Train Your Dragon" and "Despicable Me." Beautifully executed, critically praised animated films like these sometimes make us forget that much of what passes for Hollywood family entertainment often looks like cartoon and/or CGI excrement. Three trailers for upcoming kid-friendly releases are proof of that. The question is: Which of these previews promises to deliver the most excruciating film-going experience the whole family can share? We begin with "Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore," the unfortunately named talking-animal sequel that arrives in theaters tomorrow with (so far) a shockingly low 8 percent positive score on Rotten Tomatoes. One look at the trailer pretty much explains why. Looking ahead to September, we've got "Alpha and Omega," a cartoon love story about two wolves trying to survive in the wild. This preview violates more cliche crimes than it's possible...

'The Town': Assessing the trailer for a film destined for the Toronto International Film Festival

One of the many films announced today as part of the Toronto Film Festival line-up is Ben Affleck's "The Town," his second directorial effort after "Gone Baby Gone." If you've seen "Inception," you may well have seen the trailer for "The Town," a Boston crime thriller that contains echoes of "Gone" and whose bank heist snippets are creepily reminiscent of the opening of "The Dark Knight." Affleck did a solid job with "Gone Baby Gone" so I am intrigued to see what he does with his second effort. But I have one major issue with the trailer, aside from the fact that it screams out for more Jon Hamm. The preview reveals a bit too much detail about the plot, particularly via the reveal that happens at around the 1:55 mark. That's a moment I might have preferred not to see before heading into the theater. If you dared to...

Second trailer for Facebook movie 'The Social Network' is here

So are we voting "like" on "The Social Network," the movie that tells the story of the founding of Facebook and will open this fall's New York Film Festival?

Assessing the 'Green Hornet' trailer

The first trailer for "The Green Hornet" -- a movie that the fan community already has expressed grave concerns about -- has been released. And after watching it, I think it's safe to say that it's going to change ... absolutely nothing. I am still not sure if Seth Rogen is quite the right fit for the wealthy, suave, hard-partying guy who takes on the role of stealth crime-fighter. And absolutely nothing about the directorial choices I can see in the trailer tells me this is a Michel Gondry movie. A commenter on YouTube -- one of the ones who wasn't dropping an f-bomb or talking about how awesome Christoph Waltz will surely be in this comic book movie extravaganza ("CHRISTOPH FRIGGIN WALTZ MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) -- described this "Green Hornet" as a cross between "Iron Man" and "Kick-Ass." That sounds about right to me. But take a look for yourself, then...

Sofia Coppola's 'Somewhere': Assessing the movie trailer

The trailer for "Somewhere," the upcoming film from Sofia Coppola, was released yesterday and looks quite promising. Fans of Coppola will be pleased to see all that lush, urban imagery, as well as what appears to be a return to the sort of meandering, contemporary character study the writer-director navigated so elegantly in "Lost in Translation." Speaking of "Lost in Translation," it's impossible to ignore one thing about this trailer: the fact that "Somewhere" looks an awful lot like "Lost in Translation." Let's have a look at the clip, take a brief break for some Suntory time, then count all the connections between the latest Coppola effort and the previous, Academy-Award-winning one that happened to contain the best karaoke scene ever....

Battle of the movie trailers: 'Inception' vs. 'Adjustment Bureau'

In what may be the hottest psychological-thriller battle of 2010, new previews for both Christopher Nolan's much-anticipated "Inception" and the Matt Damon drama "The Adjustment Bureau" recently debuted online. And weirdly, though the films are clearly different, their trailers share a number of things in common. In this corner, we have the latest, lengthiest trailer for "Inception" (in theaters July 16), which gives us quick-cut glimpses of a super-stressed-out Leonardo DiCaprio; a possibly doomed romance between DiCaprio and Marion Cotillard; vaguely sci-fi themes about stealing from the subconscious of others; a glass-smashing car crash and an epic building collapse; Joseph Gordon-Levitt doing some pseudo-"Matrix"y stuff with a bunch of levitating guys; and a pervasive paranoid vibe that's been cranked up to 11. And in the other corner, there's "The Adjustment Bureau" (coming Sept. 17), which shows us images of a super-stressed-out Matt Damon; a possibly doomed romance between Damon and...
