Feet per hour for many buses in snow

In what's been described as the worst gridlock in the area since September 11, 2001, hundreds were stranded in their cars for hours upon hours, inching only blocks or less.

Metro tries parking sensors, cell payments

Metro will roll out a pilot program of sensors on parking spaces that will collect data on parking usage to help Metro make strategic choices and to keep riders from having to drive in circles looking for a spot.

Bikesharing programs in many other cities shut down for the winter, but Arlington and the District's Capital Bikeshare is still gaining steam, despite frigid temperatures.

30% of buses 6+ minutes off schedule

Metro this morning took the second major step of its initiative to make information on service disruptions, routes and timetables public and available in digital form, by adding API methods for buses. Rail info has been provided since August. Among other possibilities, the realtime bus positions, which indicate how many minutes ahead or behind of schedule a bus is running, offer a window into performance. At 10:30 this morning, there were 266 buses navigating the region, and a quarter were running 7 minutes or more behind. (Ten percent were at least 13 minutes late.) Ten percent were two minutes early.

App shows cell phone bans by state

With so many states passing distracted driving laws, Thanksgiving travelers might find it hard to keep track of what kind of cell phone use is illegal in each state. Illume Software, creators of the iZUP cell phone application, launched a new feature to help clear up some of the confusion this holiday.

Circulator ridership, and subsidy, grows

Not long after Metro figures showed that Metrobus ridership has declined significantly in recent years, a new online dashboard from overseers of the Circular bus system allows users to track metrics such as ridership and safety, and it shows that ridership has increased significantly. But costs were nearly $4.30 per ride for the Waterfront line, and the Smithsonian-National Gallery loop recouped only 6 percent of what it cost to run via rider fares, the tool also showed.

Track Bikeshare use in real-time

With Capital Bikeshare still in its first month of existence, stations are still being rolled out, and observers are gauging its success and considering whether the system might work for them. So this nifty map, which updates in real-time to show which stations are most used and at what times of the day is quite interesting--especially because it works for bikesharing systems in DC and around the globe.

Track your SmarTrip--and habits--online

Metro today announced an enhanced Web site on which customers can check the balance of their SmarTrip card, monitor any SmartBenefits activity through their employers, and review their usage over time, including on their iPhones and Blackberrys. Users can also report cards online as stolen, lost, cracked or malfunctioning, though they can't add to their balance from a credit card. The immediate reaction from normally-skeptical Metro riders seemed positive for the long-anticipated move.
