AU selling SmarTrip on campus

In talking to college students about transit in the D.C. area, this topic often comes up: How could we get a discount? (The other thing they want is to see more police officers on the trains and in the station areas.) Metro doesn't offer a discount specifically for students at local colleges. That surprises some students, because in their lower school days in their hometowns, they did get discounts to use transit.

SmarTrip exit change delayed till Oct.

Metro riders will have to wait until October for cheaper SmarTrip cards. Metro had previously announced that the price of cards would drop from $5 to $2.50 on Aug. 29. However, Metro needs more time to make programming changes to add-fare machines inside Metrorail station exit gates, said Metro spokeswoman Angela Gates.

SmarTrip's brain bigger, but slower

If you noticed the Metro fare gates take a beat longer to open when you tap down a SmarTrip card, don't replace the card. Metro says it recently upgraded its fare collection technology to handle more complex transactions with the electronic cards. But that means its taking longer for the circular target on the fare gate to read the card's information.

Track your SmarTrip--and habits--online

Metro today announced an enhanced Web site on which customers can check the balance of their SmarTrip card, monitor any SmartBenefits activity through their employers, and review their usage over time, including on their iPhones and Blackberrys. Users can also report cards online as stolen, lost, cracked or malfunctioning, though they can't add to their balance from a credit card. The immediate reaction from normally-skeptical Metro riders seemed positive for the long-anticipated move.
