Two up, one down at Foggy Bottom

A Metro rider who uses the Foggy Bottom station complains that the new escalators at the entrance are constantly configured to have two going up and one going down during both the morning and evening rushes. Why is that done?

Metro: L'Enfant escalator brakes failed

A preliminary investigation into the escalator failure at L'Enfant Plaza Station followed last weekend's Jon Stewart/Stephen Colbert rally, when the system broke a 19-year record for Saturday ridership, has determined that the escalator brakes failed, causing the unit to speed up and dumping the riders at the bottom.

Biding time at Bethesda escalator

At Bethesda Metrorail station on Tuesday, the peak of the peak surcharge began uneventfully at 4:30 p.m. The peak of the peak that riders were more likely to notice began at 5:12 p.m. That's when the stopped escalator between the platform and mezzanine started to create its peak crowd of waiting riders.

One long Bethesda escalator out

One of the long escalators at Bethesda is back up and running, after both were briefly out this morning. At Ballston, both escalators from the street are out; same with the G and 12th streets entrance at Metro Center.

Trapped in a cage--outside the zoo

A family of five was stuck in the elevator at the Cleveland Park Metro station for more than a half hour this afternoon. At 12:45p.m., fire spokesman Pete Piringer sent out an alert that they were trapped, and it wasn't until just before 1:30 that he wrote that the family was "freed and happy." A family of five was stuck in the elevator at the Cleveland Park for more than a half hour this afternoon. At 12:45p.m., fire spokesman Pete Piringer sent out an alert that the elevator had broken with the parents and children trapped inside, later adding that everyone was safe and unharmed. It wasn't until just before 1:30 that he wrote that the family was "freed and happy." The elevator runs up a lengthy shaft from the Metro station mezzanine to Connecticut Avenue near the zoo, and is often used by families with strollers and young children bound to check out the animals--but the family likely expected to be outside, with the animals confined to their cages, not the other way around.
