A not-so-fond farewell for Dupont south escalators

Metro begins a nine-month project on Wednesday to replace the balky escalators at Dupont Circle’s south entrance, considered some of the least reliable in a transit network that relies on them more than any other in North America. How would you design Metro cars?

We have a new online page where we invite you to suggest what you'd like to see in the new rail cars. Metro already has made some important choices. For example, the new cars will have three sets of doors on each side, just as the cars do now. The new seats still will face forward and back. The transit authority isn't planning on switching to the inward-facing seating you see on the New York City style of cars. But in our unofficial design exercise, you can think as big as you want about the car design. You can share your ideas in writing or upload a photo showing a concept from another subway system or something you've created.

New escalators for Foggy Bottom

The transit authority is about to begin a project that should ease the notorious bottleneck for Metrorail riders trying to get in and out of the Foggy Bottom Station. Next Monday, workers will start replacing the three old, often-out-of-service escalators with three new ones. Also, they will add a staircase adjacent to that bank of escalators between 23rd Street NW and the station mezzanine. Above it all will be a canopy to better protect the works from the weather.

Many Metrorail disruptions ahead

During my online chat on Monday, several travelers submitted questions about Metro's maintenance program. I'd like to use one such question to discuss what's ahead for 2011 on Metrorail. Metro Maintenance: "Why is Metro continuing to perform track maintenance that inconveniences riders, or is this Metro playing catch-up for neglecting routine maintenance?"

AU selling SmarTrip on campus

In talking to college students about transit in the D.C. area, this topic often comes up: How could we get a discount? (The other thing they want is to see more police officers on the trains and in the station areas.) Metro doesn't offer a discount specifically for students at local colleges. That surprises some students, because in their lower school days in their hometowns, they did get discounts to use transit.

Timing Metro travel this weekend

The clocks fall back an hour at 2 a.m. Sunday as Daylight Saving Time ends, but for Metrorail riders, that's the easy part of the clock-watching this weekend. Metro turns back its clocks along with everyone else. All the homeward bound partiers need to remember is that Metrorail will continue operating till 3 a.m. Eastern Standard Time. The trickier part of weekend transit planning will be tracking the train schedules late Friday and early Saturday, as Metro prepares to shut down segments of the Orange and Blue lines for a big weekend maintenance project.

What will Metro's next cars look like?

Riders ask if they can have any say about what the next generation of rail cars will look like. Metro says the answer is yes, and it will happen over the next year and a half. But riders have very different ideas about what is comfortable and efficient in a car design. It's unlikely the final design will make everyone happy.

Slowdown on Red Line

Many Red Line riders think the trains are slowing down between Bethesda and Friendship Heights. It's not their imagination. Metro inspectors have identified a section of track in that area that needs repair. That's not an unusual condition in the aging rail system. The transit authority schedules repairs, and until they can be completed, orders trains to slow down as they pass through the zone as a safety precaution.

Metro's platform sign problem

For several weeks, Metro riders have been telling me they think there's something wrong with the platform signs that display train arrival times. I've been getting complaints about the electronic signs for years. The most common complaint is that the sign says the next train will be eight cars long and it turns out to be six. But the new complaints are different. First of all, there have been a lot of them. Second, they focus on errors in the arrival times. They say the signs show a train boarding when it left several of minutes earlier, or that the signs show a train three minutes away when it already is at the platform.

Several Metro riders have written to ask why the outbound Orange Line trains are slow between East and West Falls Church. Metro says there's no speed restrictions on that section of track. There is a work zone farther out, between Dunn Loring and Vienna, where trains must move at 35 to 45 mph. That's where Metro is replacing cross-ties, work that is scheduled to continue this weekend.

Today's read: Metro brawl strategy

The Post today featured news and opinion about the Friday night fight on Metrorail. Handing fights that migrate: Metro Transit Police will escort potentially disruptive groups of people through the rail system in the wake of a weekend brawl that left several people injured, a senior police official said Tuesday. More fare chart mysteries

I've described the variety of new signs Metro posted to mark the fare increases, but as this occasional rider describes his problems with the signage, he points out something I hadn't noticed till today: The main chart, the one that lists the station-to-station fares, indicates a charge of 45 cents for a peak of the peak trip.

Transit police: Response was quick

Metro police were in the Gallery Place Station on Friday night when a large group of boisterous young people boarded a train for home, and they were at L'Enfant Plaza when a fight broke among them, Deputy Transit Chief David Webb said this afternoon.

Easing the Orange Crush

A previous posting reviewed Metro's plan to split the Blue Line at rush hour and ease congestion in the tunnel. But at the same time it decreases the number of Blue Line trains in the tunnel by three per peak hour, Metro plans to add service to the Orange Line by starting three more rush hour trains at West Falls Church. That fills up the tunnel again. So how's this going to work as Metrorail service is extended toward Dulles?

Managing demand on Metrorail

Officials who worry about traffic congestion in the D.C. region now talk more about demand management than about building new roads. Metro officials are developing a similar theme when they talk about the future of our transit system. In each case, the planners' premise is that we're running out of room, and it's really expensive to build new stuff.

Biding time at Bethesda escalator

At Bethesda Metrorail station on Tuesday, the peak of the peak surcharge began uneventfully at 4:30 p.m. The peak of the peak that riders were more likely to notice began at 5:12 p.m. That's when the stopped escalator between the platform and mezzanine started to create its peak crowd of waiting riders.

SmarTrip's brain bigger, but slower

If you noticed the Metro fare gates take a beat longer to open when you tap down a SmarTrip card, don't replace the card. Metro says it recently upgraded its fare collection technology to handle more complex transactions with the electronic cards. But that means its taking longer for the circular target on the fare gate to read the card's information.

Huge Labor Day project on Red Line

The transit authority has released more details about a track work project that will have a huge impact on Red Line service over the entire Labor Day weekend. Metro plans to do several projects along the tracks. To clear room for the work, five stations will be closed in what amounts to the biggest maintenance shutdown in Metro's history.

Second fare hike stresses Metro

Way back in the early spring, the people responsible for Metro's revenue collection envisioned a scenario worth avoiding: The transit authority's fare increases would leave many riders confused about how much they were paying. Worse yet, fare collection would perform poorly just as the new fares kicked in. Same old Metro, the riders would say, charging us a premium while failing to deliver a top notch service. It was a vision that pretty much resembles the past 72 hours in the transit system.

Metrorail delays morning surcharge

Metrorail will impose only the afternoon portion of its new "peak of the peak" fare surcharge on Monday. Commuters will get a few weeks reprieve on paying the extra 20 cents during the morning peak, as the transit authority struggles to adjust its fare programming.
