The weekend and beyond

The two-week Cherry Blossom Festival starts Saturday, somewhat in defiance of the chilly, gray and potentially rainy — even snowy — weather forecast for the weekend. Saturday’s National Marathon means extensive traffic congestion in the middle of the District throughout the morning and early afternoon. Metro will open an hour early, at 6 a.m., to accommodate the marathon participants. Meanwhile, the circus is at the Verizon Center all weekend. Here’s what travelers need to know for the weekend and beyond.

The weekend and beyond

Travelers dodged the snow, but they won't escape the cold and wind in the D.C. area this weekend. There's not much scheduled in the way of outdoor activities that might interfere with getting around. At Verizon Center, the Wizards play the Phoenix Suns at 7 p.m. Friday and the Boston Celtics at 7 p.m. Saturday. Metro has a more modest program of track work this weekend. There are no major road work programs scheduled for the daytime, but there are some lane and ramp closings.

The weekend and beyond

This long holiday weekend includes two major transportation projects that will affect both transit users and drivers. Metro needs to replace four track switches at the Foggy Bottom Station, a big project that will require closing the station for the entire weekend. Meanwhile, drivers should avoid the Capital Beltway's Telegraph Road interchange, where lanes and ramps will be closed as part of the Wilson Bridge project.

The weekend and beyond

On the first full weekend of the new year, road crews and transit workers will be busy, despite the cold weather. They won't let up in the coming work week either. Shake off that holiday lethargy and get ready to deal with the renewed energy of the crews that will be blocking lanes and closing stretches of track. Here are some highlights of what's ahead.

The weekend and beyond

It's the last weekend for Christmas shopping, so be prepared for crowded conditions around the malls. There may also be some boomlets of holiday getaway traffic on Friday evening and Saturday morning among the lucky ones who are on vacation during the coming week. This is also the last weekend of the year for Metro track work delays. Riders may also encounter police who want to search their property before they board the trains and buses.

The weekend and beyond

Your weekend travel will be done in cold weather, with rain on Sunday, says the Capital Weather Gang. That won't stop people from checking out the many holiday light displays, including the one at the National Zoo or the lighted boat parade in Annapolis. Leesburg is holding its holiday parade on Saturday morning. In this cold weather, there aren't a great number of work zones or big events to slow down travel, but there seem to be enough of them in strategic places to get in the way of your holiday outings. Here are some highlights.

The weekend and beyond

Whether you're heading for a Night at the Newseum, the BB&T basketball classic or just out buying a tree, bundle up for your travels in the D.C. area this weekend. The Capital Weather Gang says it will be cold and increasingly windy. Late-season paving projects are slowing down as the temperatures get colder, but there's still plenty of road work in the region, and Metro workers will be out on the Red and Orange lines. Next week, watch out for the lighting of the National Tree on the Ellipse, an annual event that puts commuters in a Grinch-like mood.

The weekend and beyond

Friday is not a holiday, though for the most part, it may look like one on the roads and rails. Parking regulations and HOV lane restrictions are in effect. Metro doesn't have any track work scheduled for this weekend. Here are some highlights of what travelers will contend with over the weekend and beyond.

The weekend and beyond

The weekend weather looks gorgeous, but despite high temperatures approaching 70 degrees, some travelers may be heading for the season's first weekend of skating at the Sculpture Garden Ice Rink on the National Mall. Others with a more sedentary view of athletics may just take in the Wizards on Friday night or the Capitals on Sunday evening at Verizon Center. Meanwhile, the Calder Quartet will be at the Sixth and I Historic Synagogue, and for those preparing for holiday gift-giving, the Museum Shop Around is at Strathmore. Here's my weekly review of the traffic and transit issues you may need to deal with.

The weekend and beyond

No big rallies or runs this weekend, but transit riders should be aware of the maintenance disruptions on three of Metro's rail lines. The Capitals and Wizards will be playing at Verizon Center, and the Greater Washington Heart Walk is scheduled for Saturday at Nationals Park. Travelers should find the weekend weather crisp and mostly clear.

You can rally on Saturday, you can run on Sunday. You can just dodge the resulting traffic. Do stay alert for the trick-or-treaters on Halloween, and don't party too hard in Georgetown. Whatever activity you're planning this very busy weekend, you'll be doing it in clear weather, but the temperatures will turn cooler. Here's a guide to planning the weekend's travel in the D.C. area.

With mostly sunny skies and pleasant temperatures, it should be a good weekend for traveling out for a day of trick-or-treating at the Air and Space Museum's Udvar-Hazy Center near Dulles Airport on Saturday, or taking in the Bill Cosby show Saturday night at the Kennedy Center. It's also Disney on Ice weekend at the Patriot Center. Here's a review of some of the obstacles that travelers will face as they move around the D.C. area.

Rallies, roadwork and rail delays

After this week's super soaking, the weekend should look pretty good to travelers, with partial sunshine and mild temperatures. An usually large number of events are scheduled for the National Mall. St. Michael's hosts a nautical crowd for the Mid-Atlantic Small Craft Festival on Saturday, while foodies will visit the Taste of Bethesda. Baseball has left D.C. for the year, but the Orioles will be finishing the season at Camden Yards. At 12:30 p.m. Sunday, the Capitals play in the Verizon Center. Here's my list of the likely sources for crowds and delays this weekend and beyond.

The weekend and beyond

Yom Kippur begins at sundown Friday. The H Street NE Festival will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday between Eighth and 14th streets NE. Motorcyclists have gathered for an annual celebration in Ocean City. Many travelers will be out enjoying the last weekend of summer, with daytime temperatures in the low 80s in the D.C. area. But there are quite a few shutdowns, delays and lane shifts between those travelers and their destinations.

Are you ready for some football?

Delightful weather will launch weekend activities on Friday and Saturday before rain moves into the D.C. area on Sunday. The Nationals are home this weekend, but the real traffic-generator will be the Redskins season opener on Sunday night. There are other events, including a Sunday morning triathlon and Adams Morgan Day, that will require street closings. Plus, some of our big construction projects have scheduled significant changes over the next week.
