Casualties of the NFL lockout

Now that the dust has settled on the lockout and football is back, what is left is to expose some of the casualties of the lockout and the new collective bargaining agreement between the NFL owners and the players.

NFL chaos continues from spring to summer to fall

My suspicion is that this year the successful teams will be the ones who best prepared during the lockout for the craziness that will start this week -- free agency; camps without any offseason practice or the like; out-of-shape players, and rookies less prepared than ever.

More headaches expected for the NFL on concussion issues

The real new threat looming is the widening perception that football is unsafe at any speed. While safety was a priority bone of contention during labor negotiations, it is by no means certain that the issue has been resolved.

NFL Lockout: An open letter to DeMaurice Smith

DeMaurice Smith has a chance to rewrite history. It’s not about the rhetoric of a lawyer or politician, but of the true leader of courage who knows it’s not about pleasing everyone, it’s about making things right.

NFL Lockout: A gift for old school football fans

Right of first refusal is worse than the franchise tag

Right of first refusal may be acceptable if the owners agree to only having one, but the whole concept goes against the very nature of what the players won back in the 1990s by striking and suing the NFL in the first place.

Turning adversity into advantage

The teams that stay together during the tumultuous NFL lockout will have the best chance to endure and emerge healthy, wealthy and ready to compete for an NFL championship.

The waiting is the hardest part

What if the lockout never ends? What if the lockout ends tomorrow? And what about free agents? This is enough to drive an NFL fan to the brink, but the brink of what?

Hey rookies: Get your money, but earn it first

When it comes to a new collective bargaining agreement, one thing both sides can agree on is that a rookie wage scale needs to be established. Both agree that rookie contracts have gotten out of control, and they’re right.

No need for rookie wage scale

The current clamor for a rookie wage scale goes against the system of capitalism that landed the NFL owners in their positions and threatens the limited rights of first-year players in the league.

Short-term leverage does not equate to long-term harmony

Despite the back and forth between the NFL owners and its players this offseason, the biggest and revenue issue remains the television contracts. Maintaining that money flow should be more than enough motivation for the two sides to get a deal done.

Locked into a lockout?

Can the lockout still be a “win-win” for both sides through the very painful process of agreeing to measures that “hurt” both sides? Many call this pain the absolute essence of any good negotiation.

Convenient compassion

By canceling the 2011 rookie symposium, the NFL made a short sighted decision that showed its feigned compassion for its players is one of mere convenience and is not genuine.

NFL’s exploding popularity of “all the other stuff” will save 2011 season

The NFL’s current level of offseason popularity should be enough to prevent the actual game cancellations that took place in the 1980s. Losing this offseason should be enough to get the two sides to come to terms so games in September don’t get lost.

While some players are finding alternative avenues to prepare for the NFL season, others are taking their downtime for granted, leading to a growing number of offseason arrests.

It’s not easy to say whether the owners or the players have the best interests of the game at heart, but it looks like the owners haven’t learned well enough what made the NFL a success in the past.
