'Not Another Teen Movie'

They said it: Not Another Teen Movie! But it didn't stop debuting director Joel Gallen from making the film. The obvious question: Are teen movies even worthy of parody? Isn't it obvious how awful they are without having to go over the tiresome details?

Only fans of teen movies are likely to watch this movie, which is either a delicious or depressing irony, depending on how you look at it.

To those still curious, the movie covers just about everything in the genre, including questionable uses for pies; the requisite gross-out scene (including incest make-outs and one very phlegmy tongue-to-tongue encounter); the usual bet involving a popular, Freddie Prinze Jr.-like jock (Chris Evans) deceiving a nerd-beauty (Chyler Leigh) into believing he loves her – then falling in love with her; and the various archetypes, including the uber-bitch cheerleader (Jaime Pressly), the gonzo dad (Randy Quaid) and the naked exchange student (Cerina Vincent).

There are more than a few references to teen-movie granddaddy John Hughes (including a cameo appearance by Molly Ringwald), but they fall as flat as many of the gags.

Some routines are funny, it must be said. But more often than not, you'll be groaning with painful recognition rather than actually laughing.

NOT ANOTHER TEEN MOVIE (R, 90 minutes)Contains all the bad stuff: sex, nudity, obscenity, drug content and slapstick violence. Area theaters.
