He's The Worst Ever

Ever since 1948, when Harvard professor Arthur Schlesinger Sr. asked 55 historians to rank U.S. presidents on a scale from "great" to "failure," such polls have been a favorite pastime for those of us who study the American past.

Bush has certainly been the worst President in my 56 years, but thanks to this summary of historical knowledge, he is seen not only sharing the same qualities of stubborness, surrounding himself with yes-persons, but is clearly their King. It would truly take a miracle akin to Moses coming down from the mount with new tablets telling us that unprovoked wars are good, breaking long-standing treaties and agreements are good, inability to see anything other than what his circle of sycophants tell him as good for Bush to emerge from the bottom of the Presidential list. Only one thing, this time, the stakes are much, much higher and we stand perilously close to the end of American moral and influential dominance on earth or even outright destruction. The stakes are just that high. In six short years we have lost influence, moral authority, a budget surplus turned into the highest deficit ever, a horribly mismanaged war that should never have been and the emboldening of enemies worldwide. Oh yea, were in trouble alright. Bush and Cheney need to do a 180 turn now, or resign and let people with the true interest of America, and the world, do what they either cannot or will not do.

In all fairness to President George W. Bush, his lack of God-given intelligence contributed to his ineptness.

I not only totally agree that Bush is the worst President ever. However with his total disregard for reality brings to mind when we can have the President examined to see if he is mentally competant, the problem with that is we would get Chaney. As our constitution plainly says that the President is the Commander in Chief and no one wishes to deny our fighting forses with the equipment to stay alive. There is no choice. Government of the people has been thrown into the trash heap. If we are to believe this disgusting liar about freedom and democracy in the middle east, why are we not demanding free elections in Saudi-Arabia, Yemen, Jordan, but they are our dictators. My hope is we can survive the next two years of this President. Robetal1

If we impeach both Bush-olini and Iron Dick, after Jan. we would get Nancy Pelosi, who while far from perfect, would be just fine with me for two years until a new election. Bush and Cheney need to be arrested for treason. Plain and simple. Faster too.

How far the administration has strayed from the rule of law might make a judge pound the gavel on Bush but those familiar with the techniques used by Bushs covert apparatus including the assassination of American civil rights leaders recognize that Bushs chemical application programs and other intelligence abuse against Americans go far beyond any information that any judge or newspaper has access to.

The worst is for history to decide. he seems like the worst partly because we have to live with him right now. But he also has the support of the largest propganda apparatus in history. No matter how wrong he gets it, or how badly the public whoops his butt in elections, the major public media networks still blab on like hes the greatest thing since the flush toilet. Whats with that?

I dont think Bush has a clue about anything. He is just a perfect example of what can happen if you are born into the right race, right family, go to the right schools, know the right people. He did not have to be brave, patriotic, smart or accomplished in any real sense. The American public should have been outraged that any political party would propose him for any office.

Carter didnt kidnap extraordinary rendition people and torture them. Carter didnt murder over half a million people. Carter didnt think he was above the law. Carter didnt refuse to listen to anyone who didnt agree with him. Bush has done all of the above and more. He is far and away the worst president and probably the worst human being that has ever held the offic.

Worst president ever is probably overstating it. But Worst 2-Term President Ever? George W. Bush easily takes that prize. Too bad for his father. George H.W. Bushs standing in 50 years will probably tarnished by his son amazing performance.

Hes the Worst! Thank you for the insightful article on the rankings of past Presidential leaders and comments on the predicted ranking of the current President. Bush, in my opinion, is the worst. He was superior in the aftermath of 9-11 by demonstating empathy for its victims and quick to formulate a plan for addressing Al Quaida terroristseven though the deck of cards was an elementary manner in which to identify the prioritized Al Quaida leaders, and He also has provided leadership for the aids epidemic in some African countries. Bush has lied to the public regarding reasons for attacking Iraq, increased the national debt tremendously, failed to support Katrina relief, and failed to address pressing domestic issues such as the minimum wage, long term Social Security funding, environmental challenges, and immigration. Bush is the worst! Mace in Panama City Beach, FL

Outstanding analysis! Ranking changes by exception, not as a rule. Your disection of his flaws, not counting that he has been the greatest creator of anarchy and/or chaos in the Mid-East, would prompt to bet that in fifty years more he will be ranked the worst we have ever had. The sad thing is that in less than firty years Cheney and Rumsfeld and all those names of Congressmen and Senators that went along with Bush will be resting in complete oblivion.

Before this Bush administration or shortly thereafter, I remember e-mailing a note to the White House agreeing with Gore Vidal. How does George W sleep at night knowing hes such a bungler?

Bush compares to Polk? Hardly! Polks misguided efforts were motivated by desires for territorial expansion, and, perhaps, a dislike for Mexico. Historians indicate that westward expansion was high on the nations public policy agenda at that time. Polk acted in a manner consistent with the mood of his day. Bush, on the other hand, lied, out of the blue, about the threat to our national security if Israel is to be covered in the term our, posed by Iraq, and went to war to pursue a hidden personal agenda. As facts are accumulating it is becoming evident that Bushs motives were steeped in revenge for an attempt on his fathers life ordered by Saddam Hussian. Regrettably, I do not know off hand what the casualties were, numerically, in the Mexican-American War. But I do know that Bushs lies have led to nearly 3,000 American casualties, some 30,000 seriously wounded military personnel and the loss of more than 500,000 Iraqi civilian lives...all for nothing other than his revenge and Dick Cheneys ego and personal greed! George W.Bush is, by far, the worst American president in my life time, and probably in American history. He has abused his powers beyond anyone ever to occupy the White House. We can only hope that Congress will curtail future presidents from doing the same. Historians will write our democracys collective obituary if preventive measures to control presidential war making powers are nor put into effect soon. The Iraq war makes this abundantly clear.

Yonkers, NY, 03 Dec. 2006. You could very well be right in your judgment of George W. Bush as the worst President the United States has ever had so far. I say SO FAR because one never knows what the future may still bring. Mariano Patalinjug. MarPatalinjug@aol.com

I totally agree with this conclusion. Where were all of you briliant historians in 2004 when it would have made a difference in the course of the nation? Most of the information now being used to evaluate Bush was known by many in 2004 yet he was able to deceive the nation into thinking he was a strong leader. The media failed us.

Very good article. It is so sad that the elder Bush and former Sec of State Powell did not have the courage to speak up about the current Presidents actions several years ago.
