Why We Need More Troops in Iraq

In Iraq today we have a responsibility to do what is strategically and morally right for our nation over the long term -- not what appears easier in the short term.

How long is this surge supposed to last? And what is the mission in Iraq and how do we win? And arent all the arguments in favor of escalation really reasons why the US should NEVER have set foot in Iraq in the first place? The war in Iraq is as hopeless as it is tragic. Sadder still, this outcome was perfectly predictable. We need to get our of that hell hole NOW!

The writer is an Independent Democratic senator from Connecticut. This is not accurate. Lieberman is an independent who has announced that he intends to caucus with the Democrats. Please correct this misstatement. Thank you.

Joe, you tell me who the *moderate Iraqis* are so Ill know it when we go stand by them. This vanity war was built on lies told to us by a former alcohol and cocaine abuser who, for whatever dark Freudian reasons, wanted to show his father up. By the end of January over 3,000 decent service men and women will have died because of this foolish little man. Were you, the Bubble Boy in the White House, and all of the other Chickenhawks who set things in motion with no risk to themselves forced to go live in the Green Zone in Baghdad this war would be over in 48 hours. Tell me of your sacrifices for this war, Joe. Tell me what you are denying yourself to futher the war effort. Last month the Bush twins partyied their merry ways through South America, Bush II urged us all to spend big for Christmas, and Dick Cheney went hunting with his rich friends. While they did so men and women died. Shame on you all.

Mr. Leiberman you have to know when to hold em and when to fold em. Now it is time to fold em. We owe a responsible decision to the members of our military, who have suffered a great deal because of this unnecessary war.

Joe you are such a loser. We do not belong in Iraq---we never did. Iraq had nothing to do with 9-11. So why are you not out looking for Osama. Are you insinuating that we need to invade Iran too? Gawd you and Bush are total idiots. To bad your nose is stuck up Georges a$#hole.

Mr. Lieberman, youre scaring me. Nothing that you have done or said gives me the belief that you are capable of making solid decisions that are really good for the people of America. Youve snuggled up to Bush and now you want to stay his course. Pitiful.

So, Senator Lieberman, if this war was somehow morally right, then why are only our soldiers and their families making the sole sacrifice? If this war is morally justified, then the entire country should have been mobilized and put on to a war footing. All I see are caskets coming home while the rest of American shops at Wal-Mart. The country is morally bankrupt. How dare you only ask for more sacrifice from our broken army, our soldiers and their families. Bring back the draft and lets see your family members join my son and his fellow soldiers in Iraq.

Dear Sir: Your simplistic view of the very old please read the history of this area of the world in the post WWI era and unchanged situation in Iraq, and the complexity of the Shiite and Sunni interactions is all so common now a days. It is akin to saying the the Prostestants and Catholics in Ireland and working together to destroy Democracy and the British way of life. Please address this grave situation with more insite and knowledge

As a former soldier in the U.S. Army, I am nauseated when someone like Mr. Lieberman attempts to wrap himself in the American flag -- more likely several American flags -- and insinuate himself into the ranks of our brave troops. Gerald Fords newly published comments about the war in Iraq show common sense. Liebermans show grandiose wishful thinking, contempt for civilian victims of the war as well as our own casualties, and hint at some perverted neo-conservative agenda for the Middle East.

If Joe really thinks that, then lets see the army extend their recruiting age so he can put his money where his mouth is, and march smartly down to the recruiters office and sign right up. How about it, Joe, be right there in the front row, lead the country to victory in Iraq? But, since its kind of a foregone conclusion that that would never happen, maybe he should instead find a chair, and his notes, and re-evaluate all that pro-war rhetoric...

What planet does Sen. Lieberman live on? THis man actually believes that the US can win anything in Iraq. Where did he come up with this idea? The Iraqis dont want us there and are either actively or tacitly supporting the insurgents that are targeting US troops. Lieberman is doing precisely what Mr Bush has been doing for the last three years, ignoring reality.

The question of sending more troops boils down to the question of how can we believe you? President Bush and you have promised time and time again that we are turning the corner in Iraq and time and time again we have found ourselves turning right back to the same place where we started inadequate intelligence, inadequate planning, inadequate training, inadequate security, inadequate diplomacy, and inadequate results. In your own article you continue to show the inadequacy of your understanding of Iraq. In the first sentence you identify the extremists and terrorists sponsored by Iran as the primary culprits of Iraqs deadly battlefield. Later, you talk about insurgents and death squads. No where do you delineate the fact that the extremists are supported by Iran, the terrorists by Al-Qaeda, the insurgents by Sunni, and the death squads by Shia. While I may over-simplify your presentation, the fact is that there a multitude of forces operating in Iraq and until we begin to tailor our response to each group rather than lumping them together any troop surge will only postpone our inevitable withdrawal without fulfilling our moral obligation to the truly innocent in Iraq.
