Luggage We Like

Sunday, February 17, 2002; Page E09

Among our favorites of the new crop of post-Sept. 11 luggage:

• Samsonite's Silhouette Hardside Carryon Upright Suiter With Comfort Seat (recommended retail price $380). A padded cushion fits over the end of the closed upright bag, converting it to an instant seat if you're stuck in a long airport line.

• Travelpro's Rolling Tote ($140). Looks a bit geeky, but it's compact and has a special pouch for a laptop, with room left over for a smart packer's overnight trip.

Close contenders:

• Travelpro's Overnighter ($59). This fold-out garment-style bag doesn't hold a whole lot, but it's lined top to bottom with clear, screener-friendly plastic pouches.

• Travelpro's Garment Sleeve With Removable Storage Bag ($100). Has a separate pocket for a laptop, two mesh and see-through plastic compartments inside, and room to spare inside.

• Samsonite's Silhouette 7 Instant View Bi-Fold Tote ($130). A combination computer case and overnight bag with built-in mesh and clear plastic dividers, so personal and business items are segregated.

For the compulsive:

• Equinox Expandable Sport Utility Trunk ($169). Comes with 13 separate compartments -- a place for everything, and then some.
