MedImmune Poised As Flu Spreads

Will this fall's flu panic give FluMist a boost? With widespread influenza outbreaks reported in 13 states, the nation's biggest flu-vaccine manufacturers are running out of shots. That could open a marketing window for Gaithersburg-based MedImmune Inc., whose needle-free flu vaccine has not sold well.

The company hoped to sell 4 million doses in its first year. So far, it has sold only about 400,000.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday issued a statement reminding the public that FluMist is appropriate for healthy people ages 5 to 49. MedImmune also issued a statement promoting FluMist.

The company will announce in January whether sales have picked up.
