Afghan anti-Taliban Northern Alliance soldiers keep vigil in their mountain positions close to the strategically important Salang heights, around 100 kms north of the capital Kabul, 26 September 2001. Fighting has been reported in northern Afghanistan between the Taliban and the opposition forces as both sides exchanged heavy gunfire a few kilometers south of Tajik borders 26 September 2001. The opposition forces holding only ten per cent of the war-torn country have been emboldened after Washignton announced the Taliban leaders might face military retaliations for habouring Osama bin Laden, the prime suspect in the September 11 attacks against New York and Washighton.
