Newseum to present legendary photos of legendary sports photographer Neil Leifer

The Newseum has culled through the thousands of sports moments captured by legendary photographer Neil Leifer for a retrospective at the museum. “Photo Finish: The Sports Photography of Neil Leifer” opens November 18 and will include 50 shots, including the one of Muhammad Ali standing over Sonny Liston.

National Gallery announces major show of George Bellows

The National Gallery of Art announced Thursday a major retrospective of 19th Century American artist George Bellows. The show will open at the national Gallery in 2012 and then travel to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Royal Academy of Arts, London.

Corcoran plans fund-raiser with artist Kehinde Wiley

The Corcoran Gallery of Art has enlisted a number of the artists in ‘30 Americans’ to give talks at the gallery during the run of the show from October 1 to February 12. To underwrite some of those costs, the Corcoran is sponsoring a party called “Birth of the Cool” with artist kehinde Wiley on Friday at the Capitol Skyline Hotel.

Kennedy Center announces gift of new organ and the contract extension of the NSO’s Eschenbach

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Kennedy Center and the 80th anniversary of the National Symphony Orchestra, the Kennedy Center announced Sunday that David M. Rubenstein donated a new, 5,000-pipe organ to the center. The NSO also announced that its music director Christoph Eschenbach had extended his contract through the 2012-2015 season.

The National Endowment for the Arts honors new Fellows

Given annually, the awards are our country’s highest honor in recognition of traditional arts, with the fellows represent several disciplines, including quilting, singing, and percussion. They are annually bestowed on those who have a chronicle of, and continue to display, artistic performance worth national commendation, and must still actively work within their discipline, as an instructor or a practicioner.

National Gallery unveils a Warhol tee-shirt

The National Gallery of Art was a little slow in coming to the tee-shirt fashion. Only earlier this year it sold tee-shirts connected to its blockbuster shows. Tuesday it plans to unveil a shirt in conjunction with its Andy Warhol show. It’s based on an album cover for the Velvet Underground & Nico album cover that Warhol designed. It has a huge banana on the front.

StoryCorps plans to interview hundreds of American teachers

National Gallery to display celebrated 18th Century Japanese scrolls

The National Gallery of Art announced Thursday night that it will have a temporary display of 30 scrolls of famed Japanese artist Ito Jakuchu. The collection, called “Colorful Realm of Living Beings,” is considered a national treasure in Japan and has never been seen in the U.S. in its entirety. The exhibition opens March 20.

Smithsonian receives objects from the TSA for its Sept. 11 exhibit

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History received more than two dozen items from the Transportation Security Administration at a ceremony Thursday morning. The TSA objects, which include a walk-through metal detector, will be displayed with the museum’s temporary exhibition “September 11: Remembrance and Reflection.”

Andy Warhol takes on D.C. with “Warhol on The Mall”

This fall, Washington is going pop in celebration of the life and works of pop culture artist Andy Warhol with“Warhol on the Mall,” bringing together the exhibits “Warhol: Headlines” at the National Gallery of Art, and “Andy Warhol: Shadows” at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, for a season to learn more about the color and sensationalism that revolved in Warhol’s world.
