Finally, draft relief

At last the Redskins are displaying a major shift in draft-day philosophy: drafting for the future rather than the present.

NFL Draft 2011: First round is history

The first round is in the books and the dreams and fates of thirty-two student-athletes have been reached and determined. Next is the hard part: living up to first-round expectations.

Still wandering in the desert: Part II

While the Wizards’ overall team statistics from the 2010-11 season were pretty depressing, there were some real positives that can be taken from several individual performances.

D.C. United-Houston match preview

Houston is a team about where United is: bad last year, but better this year. This should be a good measuring stick for D.C.

Wounds from 2003 playoff collapse to Lightning linger

Washington’s 2003 playoff series with Tampa Bay was an all-too-familiar nightmare as the Caps coughed up a 2-0 lead to lose the series and help springboard the Bolts to the 2004 Cup. Now, eight years later, the Capitals finally have their chance to settle the score.

Redskins draft possibilities are equally terrifying

The NFL draft is supposed to be a hopeful occasion — one full of promise and potential. For Redskins fans, it is a frightening, scary time with potential problems and danger around every corner.

El Clasico tainted by foul play

As much skill is on display in Spain, Italy and Central America, the diving, whining, and acting that goes on in those leagues has gone too far. Reactions to Barcelona-Real Madrid and CONCACAF Champions League final inside.

Storm clouds ahead for Caps

One of the chief complaints about the Southeast Division is its lack of a “classic” inter-division rivalry al a Boston/Montreal or Philadelphia/Pittsburgh, and this is how you build a rivalry like that.

Chomping at the bit for a second-round foe

Like every other Caps fan (and Caps player, for that matter), Washington’s first-round win left me salivating at the prospect of who our next opponent might be. Which of the four remaining scenarios is most preferable?

15 thoughts on the Caps

To say the Caps are historically an unlucky team in the playoffs is like saying that Philadelphia fans are unfriendly. Lady Luck rarely pays D.C. a visit in the spring, but she has this year.

Marquis rebounding nicely for Nats in 2011

After a dismal, injury-plagued first season in Washington, Jason Marquis is starting to perform like the pitcher the Nats expected to be a consistent, productive innings-eater one year ago.

Still wandering in the desert: Part 1

Looking back at the Wizards performance this season, it’s important to consider it in the context of rebuilding, and how their young players developed. That means wins and losses mean less than individual improvement.

D.C. United vs. New York match diary & player ratings

If you’re a fan of the league, what is it you want to see happen when a European star comes to MLS? On the balance, I think it’s better for the league if the stars play like stars.

Boudreau’s waiting game

Last night’s overtime periods included some of the most finessed, controlled play I’ve seen from the Capitals, due in large part to equally finessed coaching from Bruce Boudreau.

D.C. United-New York match preview

I’m not enamored with New York. That’s why D.C. United’s dominance over the Red Bulls over the years has been extra sweet. No, New York, you don’t have the greatest everything in the world: at the very least, we have the better soccer team. Or at least, we did.
