D.C. United vs. Portland match diary & player ratings

United are taking baby steps forward; they’ve began to forge an identity as a scrappy, hard-working team who can grind out results in spite of not being able to defend set pieces or create chances from the run of play. It’s a work in progress.

D.C. United vs. Portland match preview

I’m happy to see the Timbers back in the big leagues and doing well. That being said: obviously, I’m 100 percent for United. I’m a Washingtonian now. I have short hair. I wear a tie to work. My sense of self worth is based entirely on how important other people think I am. I’m D.C. through-and-through.

Matt Hendricks and the Masterton Trophy

Though he was not selected as a finalist, Matt Hendricks was nominated for the 2011 Masterton Trophy. In the history of the Masterton, Hendricks’ brand of perseverance has been rewarded, though not recently. So was he a deserving nominee?

Bob Bradley’s striker options (or lack thereof)

Before you criticize Bradley’s striker picks for the Gold Cup, take a minute to wade into the Heart of Darkness that is his full slate of possible options.

Thrashing about

The Atlanta Thrashers aren’t doing poorly where they are because Atlanta fans don’t like hockey. The Thrashers are doing poorly because they’ve been incredibly mismanaged since the day the franchise was founded.

Lucky number six

The Wizards have a mixed history with the selecting sixth in the NBA Draft, but it could be worse, they could be the Clippers.

Mike Green nominated for NHL Foundation award

Mike Green is a deserving nominee for the NHL Foundation Player Award. If he is honored with the award, Green would become the second Capital to receive it, recognition that could help the Caps position themselves as a leader in community relations in the NHL.

The Washington sports ecosystem in three acts

Would you rather have six months of mostly unappealing basketball or five months of great hockey followed by two weeks of carnage?

D.C. United vs. Colorado match diary & player ratings

So far, United are bringing the unexceptional in a major way. This team only starts to get exciting when you realize that they’re really, really young.

The greatest catch I ever saw

What a weekend to be Roger Bernadina. His inning-ending Superman catch on Friday night is the best catch I’ve ever seen.

The D.C. United Armageddon Clock (Colorado match preview)

D.C. United leaving town is the worst thing that could happen in my sports universe. It is a scenario that I don’t want to even consider. But the possibility is also real enough that it can’t be ignored.

Capitals season awards 2011

Because I’m not ready to let go of this season quite yet, I figured today I’d hand out a few awards. Doing this gave me a better sense of the depth of talent on this year’s roster.

Are new baseball strategies yielding different results?

The Milwaukee Brewers are employing an extreme defensive shift against left-handed and right-handed pull hitters. But is it working?

D.C. United vs. Dallas match diary & player ratings

They say you build from the back, which I’ve found to be true; when Fulham went from being perpetual relegation fodder to the eleventh-place juggernaut that they are today, the first thing that happened was they stopped hemorrhaging goals. There’s a rosy thought: if United really keeps at it, maybe one day we can be Fulham.

Sean Avery fights the good fight

It seems sometimes that the “final frontier” in gay advocacy is the world of sports. It’s okay to be gay everywhere else (or at the least, begrudgingly accepted), but not in professional sports.

A few moments with United’s trainer, plus match preview

I thought this would be a good time to catch up a member of DC United’s training staff, Muscle and Conditioning Coach Dr. Phineas Bofnar (not a real name because he’s not a real guy. What follows is made up)...

Caps must go the extra inch

Next year, I want the Caps to cross the divide from professional to elite, and I believe that requires exactly what Ovechkin exemplified the night he scored The Goal — blind, sliding on his back — against the Phoenix Coyotes in 2006.

The core problem

That onus for Washington’s playoff failures should be placed on the Caps core players: Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, Alexander Semin and Mike Green. When the going has gotten tough in the playoffs, this group collectively has never responded at a superstar level.

D.C. United vs. Seattle match diary & player ratings

I could really go for a good win tonight, one that makes me feel like I’m watching because United are competing for something, and not because I’m trying to figure out who will be sent adrift on an ice floe in the offseason.

D.C. United-Seattle match preview

United is floundering, but Ben Olsen has not lost his locker room just yet, and the first opportunity to turn things around comes tonight against Seattle.

The NFL lockout and unionism

If the players, absent a union, engage in acts of collusion, they may risk running afoul of the very antitrust law that to which they are appealing, quite properly, to rein in the owners.

Time to trust Bruce Boudreau

Some fans may call Bruce Boudreau ineffective, but I see the effects of his coaching all over the ice, and I think he would make a great candidate for the Jack Adams Award for Coach of the Year, regardless of the outcome of this series.

Redskins draft roundup

We’ll have to wait two or more years to decide whether or not the Redskins 2011 draft will be considered a success or a failure, but what’s to stop us from looking into our crystal balls and shaking our magic eight balls, putting on our gypsy robes and predicting the future?

Flash in the pan

I don’t think I’ve ever experienced a night with such drastic emotional highs and lows as last night at the Verizon Center. It looks bleak, I know. But it’s far from over.

D.C. United vs. Houston match diary & player ratings

With a pair of wins over two of the worst teams in the league and a pair of losses to two of the best, a trip to Houston was supposed to give United a better sense of where they stand.

Silver lining to Ryan Zimmerman’s injury

One month into the 2011 season, the biggest news surrounding the Nats is off the field where their two best players are on the shelf for an extended period of time. But there may be a basketball-related silver lining to all of this.
