Tricked with zero treats: Bills blank Redskins

While some folks in Washington wanted to see Obama’s birth certificate, I’d like to physically see the Shanahans’ Buffalo game plan. The Redskins have looked over matched and under-prepared during their three-game skid and that all falls on the coaches..

Redskins vs. Bills: past vs. present

It’s been twenty years since the Redskins beat the Bills 37-24 in Super Bowl XXVI, and the tables have certainly turned.

Hey Redskins fans, it could be worse!

Consecutive losses to one win teams. A rash of injuries. Mediocre (or worse) quarterback play. Redskins fans have a lot to complain about. But there are at least a dozen fan bases that have it worse than we do.

Caps fans rock the... purple?

Seeing Bruce Boudreau step out behind the bench sporting a limited edition purple tie in honor of Hockey Fights Cancer was a tip-off that Saturday was going to be a very special night. The Caps went on to raise $28,225 in a silent auction benefiting Flashes of Hope.

Who can figure out the Redskins?

The bleeding needs to stop before it hemorrhages. I can only hope that in five weeks I’m not thinking back to the good old days when the Washington Redskins were 3-3.

Meet the new Redskins, same as the old Redskins

The Redskins are in the midst of yet another football crisis. Is this time different? Is this in reality a rebuilding year that is actually rebuilding to something? Or is it just another year in a string of depressing Redskins seasons that never get better?

Should the Nationals pursue Prince Fielder?

While Prince Fielder has clearly established himself as one of the best power hitters in baseball, his physical makeup — and genetics — should give the Nationals pause when they consider pursuing him this offseason.

Redskins vs. Panthers: A statement game for Washington

This is a statement game for Washington. Mark my words: this game will define the 2011 Redskins.

John Beck is a roll of the dice

John Beck is an international man of mystery. I mean that literally. He went on overseas missions after he graduation from BYU, and we have no idea how he is going to do as Redskins quarterback.

D.C. United is done

I didn’t want to watch last night’s game. After Saturday’s gut-punch against Chicago the season was psychologically over. And yet it wasn’t officially over, United were lingering... until the final whistle sounded on Wednesday night’s thriller against Portland.

Same old Matt Bradley?

I spent all summer wondering whether any amount of truth in his criticism could justify Matt Bradley’s comments about Alex Semin, and trying to decide whether Bradley was the same guy I always thought he was. Now, seeing his apology, I realize he’s more that guy than ever.

Rex Grossman vs. John Beck: What will Shanny do?

If Mike Shanahan sticks to what he said in that wins are the only statistic that matter for a quarterback then Rex Grossman keeps his job against Carolina. But that would be a mistake.

Should the Nationals pursue C.J. Wilson?

The Nationals have good young pitching in the majors and the minors, but as the old saying goes, you can never have enough pitching. With Rangers ace C.J. Wilson slated to go on the free agent market this offseason, should the Nationals make a play?

D.C. United vs. Chicago Fire match diary & player ratings

D.C. United was gifted a win-and-get-in scenario ahead of Saturday’s match against Chicago. And after 90 minutes, a win looked all but assured. But United has a funny way of squandering opportunities, and found a way to do it again.

Rex Grossman experiment should have ended sooner for Redskins

Sometimes football analysis is easy. Sometimes a loss isn’t a team effort. Sometimes you can clearly see the problem. And on Sunday, that problem was Rex Grossman.

Eagles vs. Redskins: Will reality finally set in?

Nearly everyone had the Eagles and Redskins pegged wrong. The self-proclaimed “dream team” fell off the bed and woke up, while flying under the radar has kept the Redskins from getting shot down.

Let’s all laugh at the Eagles

It’s great to have another team in the division to be the laughing stock for a change, isn’t it? Usually it’s the Redskins who everyone points and laughs at, but this year the Eagles that are the overpriced embarrassment.

D.C. United’s playoff dreams face long odds

Hitting on 20 and drawing an ace. Ron Paul winning the Republican nomination. Choosing an American at random and having that person be both overweight and left-handed. According to my calculations, all of these things are more likely than D.C. United making the playoffs.

Capitals are winning ugly early, and that’s just fine

The Capitals shouldn’t be playing their best hockey right now, and this is the time, in early October, to work out all the kinks and wrinkles and get things together for when that time does come. If they can grind out wins while not playing at their best, so much the better.

USA vs. Ecuador mini-recap and player ratings

In the end, I felt pretty good about this game even though the U.S. lost. Sure, possession without goals is worthless, but we had the ball in Ecuador’s half quite a bit. The defense was solid, and Ecuador never looked dangerous until they, you know, scored and won the game.

NBA Lockout: Where’s Karl Rove when you need him?

The first rule of political combat is to define your opponent before they define you. The NBA Players Association (NBAPA) has failed miserably at this task, and will find itself on the losing end of the lockout if it doesn’t change course quickly.

USA vs. Honduras match diary and player ratings

When Jurgen Klinsmann took over, we were told that offense-minded, free-flowing soccer was on the way. Well, last month, we couldn’t even get through Belgium. Are you kidding me? Not going through Belgium? How un-German is that?

2011 NFL MVP: Peyton Manning

An 0-4 start for the Indianapolis Colts has made it painfully obvious that Peyton Manning is the most important player to his team in the NFL. So why can’t he be on the MVP ballot?

Hank Williams Jr. and the over-the-top spectacle of American sports television broadcasts

The biggest take-away from the Hank Williams, Jr. Monday Night Football controversy, and his subsequent dismissal/non-dismissal/you-can’t-fire-me-I-quit thing that went down Thursday is this: Hank Williams Jr. does not understand the First Amendment.

Capitals 2011-12 season preview: Talk is cheap for Ovechkin and the Young Guns; it’s time to back it up

The reality is that while the Capitals improved several of their weaknesses, they also failed to properly address their two most significant shortcomings: the deficiencies at center and the all-too-loose locker room culture that pervades the team.

My four-week relationship with the 2011 Redskins

I’d rather be unhappy after a win than positive after a loss, and the Redskins sitting at 3-1 through four weeks should shock the NFL world. Oddly enough, it hasn’t really, and that’s just fine. This team is doing its best work out of the spotlight for a change.

Lighten up, Redskins fans

After having the Redskins crush my spirit over the last 20 years, my first instinct is to look at the negative. But with a 3-1 record heading into the bye, it’s time to savor success — however fleeting.
