Bus driver arrested in fatal crash

Four people are confirmed dead and dozens injured in a bus accident on Interstate 95 in Caroline County, Va. Northbound lanes were blocked for several hours Tuesday morning while Virginia State Police investigated, but the highway has reopened. The National Transportation Safety Board sent a team to the scene.

Heat restrictions for some MARC lines

The Maryland Transit Administration reports that CSX has issued heat orders for until 7 p.m. Thursday. This will affect trains on the Brunswick and Camden lines, which will operate 20 miles per hour under their normal maximum speed.

Flood restrictions slow MARC, VRE lines

Travel on the Maryland Area Regional commuter service’s Brunswick Line will be restricted Wednesday afternoon due to flash flood warnings issued by CSX, the company that owns the tracks. The Virginia Railway Express will operate under flood restrictions between Rolling Road and Broad Run. Riders can expect 30-minute delays along the Manassas Line.

Shift in 14th Street Bridge work zone causes delays

The work zone on the northbound span of the 14th Street Bridge moved into the right center lane Thursday morning. This will be the next to last phase in the surface rehabilitation that began two years ago. The new pattern was a bit confusing to many people Thursday, according to officials with the project, resulting in congestion.

Inner loop lane closures in Silver Spring Thursday night

VRE delays

VRE train 304 is delayed by 20 minutes due to equipment problems. That train will skip the Fredericksburg and Leland stations to reduce crowding, but train 306 (an eight-car train) will run 10 minutes behind train 304.

Lane closings to start on 17th St. at Mall

The National Park Service is going to start closing lanes on 17th Street between Constitution and Independence avenues. This is very near the other park service project, the reconstruction of western Constitution Avenue, that also is restricting lanes.

There’s a chance of a shower on Mother’s Day, the Capital Weather Gang says, but travelers should find the going relatively easy this weekend. The Virginia Gold Cup races are Saturday at Great Meadow, The Plains. For transportation buffs, Saturday is Space Day at the National Air and Space Museum on the Mall, and a little north at Union Station, it’s National Train Day.

Metro, D.C. launching electronic fare card pilot program for students

Metro and the District Department of Transportation plan to launch a pilot program this month to move student transit passes to an electronic identification card, similar to the SmarTrip card. However, officials do not currently plan to restrict student access to the transit network with the card, a possibility raised earlier this year.
