Ripple waves goodbye to Sugar Magnolia

As a storefront, Sugar Magnolia has served its last ice cream sandwich. The Cleveland Park storefront sweets shop is becoming a 12-seat group dining room for Ripple, the adjoining restaurant where pastry chef Allison Reed made Sugar Magnolia's goodies. A spokesperson said overflow crowds at Ripple necessitated the change. Reed's dessert items from the walk-in shop aren't going very far, however: A selection of ice cream sandwiches and baked goods from Sugar Magnolia will still be available at Ripple's bar.

Moombahton goes to Hollywood

"Within Washington, it was immediately embraced by a nascent dance music scene. U Street Music Hall, also co-owned by Tittsworth, opened in March 2010 and quickly emerged as a home base, hosting packed monthly Moombahton Massive parties. (The 25th such party is Wednesday night; an even-bigger bash will take over the 9:30 Club on June 1.) For the first time, Washington had produced a viral electronic music genre of its own. Then one by one, the people who built it decamped to Los Angeles." [READ MORE]

Charming delivery and crass punch lines are Sarah Silverman's bait and switch. Asked whether she's particularly excited about performing in Washington (she appears at the Warner Theatre on Thursday), she confidently responds, as if doling out a pearl of wisdom, "It's the capital, you know." It's Tax Day. Here's a free cup of cheese.

If you were lucky enough to receive a tax refund this year, you've probably already spent it (or wisely deposited it, if you're a responsible adult). Today, April 15, is for those of us who knew we'd probably owe money but didn't want to pay out until the last possible moment. This here discounted food or drink item is for you.

And that is a truly terrifying prospect." [READ MORE]

Know New Orleans? Think again.

This weekend, Washington will witness an influx of burlesque dancers, aerial artists, hip-hop music and various forms of clowning and puppetry. No, the Fringe Festival is not arriving early. It's "The New Orleans Bingo! Show," and the somewhat surprising locale is the Kennedy Center. If this interactive performance revue were advertised on a billboard, it might read: All expectations defied since 2002.
