Evangelical bishop John Meares dies at 91

Bishop John Meares, founder and pastor emeritus of Upper Marlboro’s Evangel Cathedral, one of the largest churches in the D.C. area, died Tuesday. He was 91.

Randy Savage dies; Macho Man wrestler was 58

Randy Savage, the garishly attired professional wrestler known as the Macho Man whose bronzed biceps and signature catchphrase — “Ohhh yeah!” — made him a popular star on the mat, died in a car accident May 20 in Tampa, Fla. He was 58.

Baseball star Harmon Killebrew dies at 74

Harmon Killebrew, one of the great sluggers in baseball history, has died of esophageal cancer at age 74. Mr. Killebrew grew up in Idaho and was signed by the Washington Senators as a 17-year-old “bonus baby” in 1954. He was recommended to the Senators by an actual senator, Herman Welker, who was a baseball fan and knew the Killebrew family.

Snooky Young, 92-year-old jazz trumpeter, dies

Snooky Young, an ageless jazz trumpeter who kept performing almost until his final breath, has died in California at the age of 92. Mr. Young began his career in the 1930s and was one of the last survivors from the Age of Swing still active.

The self-effacing Cornell Dupree

In writing the obituary for Cornell Dupree, the guitarist who toured with Aretha Franklin and King Curtis, it was striking how self-effacing he could be in interviews. While he didn’t suffer from false humility, he also didn’t ‘up-play’ his accomplishments and extensive resume.
