What Paula Deen could teach the Supreme Court

Paul Deen is a perfect reminder of how much we still need affirmative action and the Voting Rights Act.

My climb out of poverty wouldn't be possible today

My concern now is for the young mothers who are struggling like I did. I watch them carrying their babies on their hips and think of my younger self. I encourage them to be hopeful like I was at their age, but I see no targeted policy initiatives for helping them.

Wendy Davis: Tough, cool and wrong

There's much to admire about the celebrated Texas filibusterer. Still, I have to stand with the cheaters on this one.

On toxic Capitol Hill, women play ball for breast cancer

Charity trumps ideology for women members of the House and Senate seeking to aid young breast cancer survivors, spend some "girlfriend" time together and maybe even beat the rival Bad News Babes media team.

Putting down the parents of North West? That is so May 2013

When Kim Kardashian and Kanye West named their daughter North West, the Twitter sarcasm was notably lame and much of it was actually approving.

New legs and nagging worries for Boston bombing survivors

For "a lot of the guys, it's almost a badge of honor to be seen with a mechanical leg,'' says bombing survivor Roseann Sdoia, who lost a leg above the knee. "But for a woman, it's really the femininity of it. It comes down to, not even your sexuality, but for a female, your identity."

'Our Mockingbird' and the ghost of George Wallace: Segregation, 50 years on

Fifty years ago this week, George Wallace tried to keep black students from entering the University of Alabama. Now there's no one standing in the schoolhouse door, but many of our public schools are still racially isolated.

Istanbul protesters redefine the label 'chapul,' or looter

Those who've clanged pots, resisted the police, and swept up broken glass and empty teargas canisters have not done so because of a park. They have, as they cleverly redefined Erdogan's insult to mean fighting for their rights, chapulled.
