Hobbits and satan sandwiches: Test your knowledge of the best quotes of the 2011 debt ceiling fight (Quiz)

When the historians write about the great debt ceiling fight of 2011, they will surely record how the dramatic vote changed the tone of Washington, threatened the fragile recovery and laid the groundwork for the next political battle. They will write about how a fallen leader heroically returned to help in the country’s time of need.

And they will also gleefully report all of the ridiculous things that our political leaders have said over the last two months.

As a parting gift before it fades from memory, we offer a quiz on the best quotes of the 2011 debt ceiling debate. See if you can identify the speaker of these notable statements.

(Note: Nothing can top Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.)’s description of the final compromise bill as a “sugar-coated Satan sandwich,” but the included quotes are only from congressional leaders and the president).
