President Obama will deliver his third State of the Union address Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET on the House floor. Here are all the details on how to follow the speech and the responses to it, and some background on the proceedings.

What is the schedule?

The president’s address is scheduled to begin at approximately 9 p.m. Prior to his remarks, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) will call the chamber to order. In years past, that happened around 8:30 p.m. Members of the Senate, cabinet officials, the first and second ladies and other officials enter as announced.

Obama’s 2011 State of the Union address lasted one hour and two minutes.

Gov. Mitch Daniels (R-Ind.) will give the GOP response immediately after the president’s remarks, and former Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain will deliver the tea party response at the National Press Club, also immediately following the State of the Union.

How can I watch it?

We will carry live video of the State of the Union and the Republican response to it on PostPolitics.com. We will also have a live blog in 44 and the Fix team will host a live-chat starting at 8:30 p.m.

All the major broadcast and cable news networks will air the address. You can listen to the remarks on C-SPAN radio here.

Who attends?

The president, vice president and speaker of the House sit behind the speaker’s podium. Other traditional attendees include most members of the House and Senate, the entire cabinet except one “designated survivor,” all nine Supreme Court justices, the dean of the U.S. Diplomatic Corps, and the first and second ladies and their guests, who typically include one more more “everyday Americans” cited in the president’s address.

This year, guests in first lady Michelle Obama’s box will include Mark Kelly, the husband of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.), and Debbie Bosanek, the personal secretary to billionaire investor Warren Buffett. See the full guest list here.

Other traditions:

Each year, the House speaker issues a formal invitation to the president to make the address several weeks before the State of the Union.

Last year’s State of the Union took place just a few weeks after the mass killing at Giffords’s “Congress on your Corner” event. Many members broke the tradition of sitting with their party and sat with members of the opposite party. This year, more than 200 members are again partnering up with members of the opposite party, according NoLabels.Org.

How can I follow the State of the Union on social media?

The most frequently used Twitter hashtag is #SOTU. According to social analytics Web site Topsy, #SOTU had been used more than 13,000 times by 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

David Nakamura reports the White House is using several social media platforms, including YouTube, Twitter and Google+ to interact with users prior to and during the State of the Union.
