The Great Flood of 2011

Here’s my story on the Great Flood of 2011. It was a great excuse to re-read John McPhee’s “The Control of Nature.” Every sentence of that book is built to last as long as the pyramids. In a time when words are much less than a dime a dozen, it’s awesome to encounter such verbal treasure. And it’s a smart book. It foretold this moment. We’ll see what happens now, with the riverine levee system filled to the brim.
