The protest yesterday that resulted in D.C. Mayor Vince Gray and much of the D.C. Council being arrested had absolutely nothing to do with abortion, school vouchers or anything else Congress has seen fit to force upon D.C. residents.
No, the protest yesterday was about the act of being forced. It was about freedom being taken away. It was about the fact that a Congress in which D.C. residents have no meaningful representation took control of the District’s democratically elected local government and overrode D.C.’s decisions regarding how to spend D.C.’s own money. It was about the fact that the same Congress that denies D.C. residents the right to take part in the national democracy took an extra step and denied D.C. residents their right to self-rule as well.
Congress quite literally took our democracy away. District residents are not a free people. Our government denies us the chance to rule ourselves. The only word for that is tyranny.
That’s why we protest. That’s why this is important.
