Andrew Zimmern to shoot ‘Bizarre Foods’ in D.C.

By my unofficial and incomplete accounting, the District has hosted more than a half dozen camera crews in recent years from various food-related networks: Guy Fieri visited a pre-fire Tune Inn in September 2010 and a week later tried to crib Gillian Clark’s fried chicken recipe; Anthony Bourdain did a quick hit on Washington and its ’burbs in early 2009 (with yours truly as a tour guide for one segment); that same year, Adam Richman attempted to land Horace & Dickie’s jumbo fish sandwich; Bobby Flay threw down with Granville Moore’s Teddy Folkman in 2008 and with Nongran Daks of Thai Basil in Chantilly in 2009; “Cupcake Wars: All-Stars” named Sticky Fingers its champ this year; and “Top Chef” dedicated a whole miserable season to the District in 2010.

Then there’s the “DC Cupcakes” phenomenon, which continues to elude me.

Now Andrew Zimmern is focusing his cameras on the nation’s capital, not necessarily looking for “Bizarre Foods,” but for those eats that define Washington D.C. (and that could be seen as bizarre by outsiders, I guess). Zimmern will be in town this weekend to film the upcoming episode. (The Travel Channel show previously hit Washington for an Embassy Row food crawl.)

So where will he go this time?

According to Zimmern’s publicist, he and his crews plan to visit the Common Good City Farm, Mr. P’s (one of my favorite places for ribs), Florida Avenue Grill and La Chiquita in Takoma Park (my current fave for pupusas). Crews also are planning to hit up some food trucks around the District.

I guess I should admit that Zimmern’s producer reached out to me for assistance in selecting locations. If you hate on the show, I will happily take some of your arrows. (Just make sure to avoid the ones already there.)

There is no air date yet for the Washington episode of “Bizarre Foods.”
