Lisa Jorgenson makes a stuffed Hubbard squash with layers beautiful enough to impress a geologist.

You know the Thanksgiving motif: a cornucopia overflowing with beautiful fruits and vegetables of the season. Nice, but not all that practical. Tell me how a wicker horn filled with uncooked produce deserves a place on your crowded holiday table. Anyone? Didn’t think so.
If you want a stunning centerpiece that does double duty as something you can eat, look no further than our feature on stuffing a Hubbard squash, complete with recipe. Most of this week’s markets will be selling a variety of winter squashes, so look for a big one. Pumpkins suited for eating will be available as well.
Buy small ones, too; I recommend adding Baked Pumpkin With Corn and Apple Pudding to your Thanksgiving menu. Talk about presentation.
