All We Can Eat

Farmers market roundup: Oct. 11-Oct. 17

I eat a lot of vegetables, but for reasons I can’t fully explain, radishes have never made it into my repertoire. People talk about the French breakfast variety, and all I think about is French toast or French pastries. In my ignorance, I once bought a bunch of daikon radishes, thinking they were parsnips. Even after I realized my mistake, the poor things sat in my refrigerator, neglected and softening while I pondered what to do with them.

Now might be the time for me to get over the radish hump as so many varieties arrive at area farmers markets. Before you buy an armload, be sure to read Emily Horton’s ode to the radish that appeared in Food earlier this year. It will help prepare you for the current crop, as well as what will be available once the consistently cool weather hits.

You can find radishes this week at today’s Ballston FreshFarm Market, Saturday’s Columbia Heights Community Marketplace, Saturday’s FreshFarm Market in Silver Spring, Saturday’s 14th & U Farmers Market, Saturday’s H Street NE FreshFarm Market and Wednesday’s Farmers Market at Maryland. Details about these and more than 100 other area farmers markets are available through the map link below.
