Five cocktails to help you calm your shakes

When the earth moves under your feet, you need some high-proof alcohol to make your head swim, too. (Dayna Smith for The Washington Post)
After a day like today, you need a belt of something higher-proof than normal. Whiskey will do the trick. Here are five picks to stop your shakes:

* Scofflaw Cocktail — 101 proof rye whiskey and 110 proof Chartreuse. Enough said.

* White Manhattan — Use 125-proof “white dog” or unaged whiskey.

* Old Fashioned — Simple, quick, straightforward.

* Stone Fence — The name “hints at the effect produced by getting outside too many of these, which is not unlike that produced by running downhill into one.”

* Sazerac — Go heavy on the absinthe today.
